Spring activities generate needed support for non-profits

Spring is a busy season for non-profits in our community — from organizations saving babies and helping foster kids to those helping victims of domestic abuse, human trafficking and seniors in need.

On May 16, A Safe Haven for Newborns (ASHFN) conducted its eighth annual “Tee Off for a Cause” golf tournament with a full field of players.

Food trucks and bar tents as well as a deejay with music on a game hole provided lots of fun on a perfectly beautiful day with low humidity. Nick Silverio, CEO and founder of ASHFN, was on hand to welcome and thank the many sponsors and volunteers who support this event as well as the fall gala year after year. This amazing non-profit to date, has saved 416 newborns from abandonment; helped more than 6,000 girls/women in their time of need; helped 74 mothers, their anonymity not a concern, choose to place their baby directly with a licensed adoption agency; helped six parents to successfully regain their parental rights, and even saved nine newborns in other states from abandonment, and one newborn saved in country of Honduras.

Among the many volunteering with this writer were Gina Perez, Meredeth McKissick, Corey Tennyson and Marti Bueso, as well as Nick’s right hand in the office, Patricia Gallardo. Net proceeds from the event brough in $49,650.00.

Kudos to the many donors including Ebsary Foundation, Bacardi, IGT Media, SBS, Coastal Construction, Casa Smiles, Miami’s Community Newspapers, Tom and Kathy Shannon Family Foundation, Arnie Perez Family, Sena Golf, The Cannon Guy, All Star Auctions, and Artemis Cakes.

Also on May 16, United Homecare’s Annual Claude Pepper Awards Luncheon took place at the Pullman drawing a record sellout crowd, many there to support honorees like Miami’s Community Newspapers’ owners, Michael and Grant Miller.

Kudos UHC’s CEO Carlos Martinez and his amazing staff including Alina Palenzuela and Blanca Ceballos for their efforts in caring for the seniors in our community.

General Federation of Women’s Club throughout South Florida (District 11) gathered on May 23 at the Coral Gables Woman’s Club, for their quarterly meeting that also served to recognize and award a $2,000 scholarship to three young women — Ana Kamila Perez Gonzalez, Amiesha Copeland, and Ashley Martinez. GFWC FL district director Dr. Ruth Martinez thanked the District Scholarship chair Helen Tarbutt and her committee, Sonia Mesa and Christel Liscombe, for their efforts in evaluating the applications and selecting the winners.

This meeting also offered South Florida clubs a chance to share and to brag about the many ways they are making a positive impact on our community. From organizing egg hunts and clothing collections to awarding numerous scholarships, and hosting cultural events to support the arts, these clubs do that and so much more.

In fact, during Coral Gables Woman’s Club fundraising cruise on the MCS World America, members will perform a “day of service” when the ship docks at Roatan, Honduras. Members will be delivering in person backpacks and school supplies to an elementary school in need before enjoying a party orchestrated by member Rita Tennyson who hales from Roatan. Anyone can join the group and funds raised will benefit the club’s free children dental clinic.

In other great non-profit news, on May 21, guests of Out of Foster Foundation (formerly Magic Waste Youth Foundation, MWYF) attended for a VIP reception. While enjoying cocktails and appetizers, guests learned about the non-profit’s mission of helping kids aging out of foster care. Rudy Bustamente (MWYF founder) welcomed guests thanking many long-time donors, many of whom pledged additional donations that night. The Out of Foster Foundation develops and implements programs to assist Miami-Dade and Monroe counties’ disadvantaged youth (ages 18-23) who have “aged out” of the foster care system by assisting them with housing, life and job skills, financial literacy and more. Out of Foster Foundation and Citrus Family Care Network will present “Hope Under the Stars” fundraising gala on Oct. 4. The featured emcee will be six-time Emmy Award winning journalist, executive coach and community advocate Laurie Jennings.
