The lazy days of summer are here for some, are busy for others

Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

For teachers and students, summer is a time to relax and travel or just enjoy what South Florida has to offer. Of course, everyone is still on a high and celebrating the Panthers bringng home the Stanley Cup once again and this writer for one cannot wait for next season. While those hockey celebrations continued for days, other events also took the stage.

On June 18, attendees at the Greater Festival & Events Association’s 12 Annual Conference and Exhibition, “There’s No Place Like Events,” were transported to the world of OZ. As participants entered the event held at the Milander Center for Arts & Entertainment, a beautifully decorated yellow brick road led them to the main event where festival planners and vendors brought magic with characters, displays and more. R Catering provided breakfast as well as a Acai Bar later in the morning while GMFEA held a 2-hour educational session that included keynote speaker Cindy Lerick, an international event expert who is a Hospitality Management professor at Kansas State University. Retta Logan, of A3 Visual, moderated a panel discussion. Panelists included Sig Greenebaum, of Sigfest, who is Director of Montreux Jazz Festival; and Alex Durant, founder of Durant Consulting who has raised more than $21 million for her clients, among whom is the South Beach Food & Wine Festival. During the event, media personality Lucy Lopez and Jeff Greene, emceed and provided fun and games while entertainment producers brought a great show during lunch.

Kudos to Executive Director Debbie Magenheimer and the GMFEA board on any impressive conference.

For those in the industry who want expand their contacts and knowledge of new trends, the GMFEA is a great resource. For more information, visit www.festivalsmiami.org.

Following the GMFEA Conference, the action moved from Hialeah to Coral Gables for the Coral Gables Woman’s Club Gringo Bingo to benefit its many charities and the Out of Foster Foundation (OOFF). This month’s Gringo Bingo was a little different with the absence of gringo, Steven Bradley; so, it was “Gringa” Bingo with this writer calling the games. Among the many attending the affair at Birdie Bistro were Out of Foster Foundation’s Secretary, Rebeca Trujillo and husband, Archie; Lynn Bauer and Dr. Hal Wanless, attorney Jerry Kavulich, Helen Reguera, Elena Leonardi, Kim Davison ,Carmen Suarez, Barbara Lapsley, Dr. Iris Torres and Ralph Rivera, Lydia Sanchez Garrett, Alida and Lawrence Fossler, Ann Ryan, Mayra Dominguez, Linda Hartwell, Jennifer Kauffman, Dede Peehl, Gloria Yacoso and Vivian Garcia.
