A Safe Haven for Newborns welcomes 370th baby

For the past 22 years, Nick Silverio, with the non-profit he founded, A Safe Haven for Newborns, has been supporting Florida’s surrendered infant statute. The organization recently welcomed the 370th baby that was lawfully left in the arms of caring firefighters at a Florida Fire Station.

Firefighters ensured both mother and the baby were healthy, and mother was offered additional support and resources with her identity protected as the law allows. That precious healthy baby was taken to a local hospital and will be placed for adoption with a loving, caring, forever family.

A Safe Haven for Newborns program has not only rescued 370 babies in Florida, as well as in other states and countries, but has assisted more than 6,000 mothers in distress/need.

It also has trained thousands of first responders, healthcare and frontline workers on how to interact when a Safe Haven event occurs, all at no cost or obligation to anyone involved.

On the topic of babies and firefighters, free CPR training was offered recently at the Coral Gables Woman’s Clubhouse. Training that included CPR for both adults and babies, was coordinated with Coral Gables firefighters by CGWC’s Health and Wellness chair Theresa Gilmore. Word has spread and it seems other woman’s clubs are interested in getting a refresher course as well.

Speaking of women’s club, the newest club in GFWC District 11, the Woman’s Club of Historic Overtown Village, conducted its first district meeting at its new meeting location, the Black Police Precinct Courthouse and Museum.

Helen Tarbartt, president of Northeast Woman’s Club, and Woman’s Club of Historic Overtown Club president Lavette Moore welcomed the many other clubs attending including the Coral Gables Woman’s Club, Miami Woman’ s Club and Coconut Grove Club. District 11 irector Virginia Yermoli thanked Lavette and her club members who provided some amazingly delicious home-baked goodies including their famous sweet potato pies. After the meeting and a raffle that raised almost $200 for Camp Boggy Creek, the ladies went upstairs to the Courthouse for a tour and presentation by the museum director Terrance Cribbs-L’orrant.

Cribbs-L’orrant took the occasion to present awards that will become annual award recognitions to some amazing women in the Overtown community, each one more impressive than the last. Those women honored were Carolyn Taylor-Pate, the first Black police and fire dispatcher for the City of Miami in 1966; Stephanie van Vark, founder of StephanieCrates; Anita Najiy, the first female assistant police chief of the City of Miami Police, and Karen Cartwright, an amazing community advocate.

In other news, Young Entrepreneurs, grades 3-10, have a wonderful opportunity to participate in “Produced with Purpose’s” fourth annual Young Entrepreneurs Showcase on Saturday, May 20, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., at Miami International Mall. Produced with Purpose, was founded by Leila Hilliard, who started her own business at 10 years old and wanted to inspire others to follow her lead.

With the help of Leila’s teachers and her parents, The Young Entrepreneurs Showcase grew from an idea to a reality allowing young kids to brainstorm an idea, develop a business, and launch it to the community. This event is free to the public, and you can support the Young Entrepreneurs by attending the event and purchasing from their businesses on that day. Registration is now open for any Kid Bosses from grades 3 to 10 who would like to participate. All business categories are welcome and encouraged to register. More than 40 businesses have participated in Young Entrepreneurs Showcase year to year.

Join the fun as Kid Bosses display their creativity and sell their original products and services that are usually sold year-round. Participants are responsible for their booth setup, sales transactions, and interactions with customers. Great training ground for these young people. Kudos to Leila and her organization for helping produce a new generation of entrepreneurs.

Until next time, share your talents and make a difference.
