A cast of wonderful characters from Alice in Wonderland made the Coral Gables Woman’s Club fifth annual Mother’s Day Tea Party uproariously fun for those in costume and not.
The White Rabbit (Corey Tennyson), Alice, the March Hare, Cheshire Cat and Queen of Hearts circulated for photo ops with beautifully themed backdrops. CGWC president Arely Ruiz, attired in white as a modern queen, welcomed the guests thanking the event chair Rita Tennyson with daughter Seasha Tennyson, auction chair and past president Mayra Dominguez and the many sponsors, auction donors, and volunteers who contributed to the success of this fundraiser to benefit the club’s free children’s dental clinic.
Arely also acknowledged support from many GFWC District 11 clubs whose members attended including the CocoPlum Woman’s Club, Miami Woman’s Club, Miami Springs Woman’s Club and Coconut Grove Woman’s Club. Free flowing prosecco with tea and an amazing assortment of tea sandwiches, petit fours, scones, and other yummy delicacies by R Catering satisfied the hungriest of guests.
Among the notables attending the affair were Dorothy Thomson, Coral Gables only female mayor; the new GFWC FL District 11 director and past CGWC president, Ruth Martinez; immediate past District 11 director, Virginia Yermoli; CGWC past club presidents Barbara Lapsley and Linda Hartwell; Barbara Wexler, a past president of the Coral Gables Junior Woman’s Club before they merged; Jenneissy Azcuy, senior vice president of Marketing and Communications for South Florida PBS; Kat Barrow-Horth, co-founder of ComicKids.org; Yoli Woodbridge, past president of the Rotary Club of Coral Gables, and many other VIPs of the more than 130 others attending.
On the festivals scene, the Greater Miami Festival and Events Association’s Annual Conference was held May 8 at Jungle Island, giving party and event planners, festival execs, producers and vendors a chance to show off their services and entertainment talent.
This organization is an amazing resource for people in that industry and it is even great for non-profits who hold regular fundraisers to support their good work. For more information, visit festivalsmiami.org.
In other news, District 6990 Rotarians, an international district that includes Nassau and Grand Bahama Island, boarded the Celebrity Reflection for a weekend cruise on May 3. The conference included two volunteer service projects in Nassau with the local Rotarians while the ship docked there on May 5.
While several Rotarians volunteered to help clear fields in a nature preserve, others participated with a promotional video to bring about awareness for human trafficking in Downtown Nassau. The two groups later joined for a boxed lunch and tour at the preserve followed by a bus ride back to city center for some liquor infused ice cream at a shop owned by a local Rotarian who donated a portion of the day’s proceeds to the human trafficking awareness campaign effort.
Kudos to outgoing District 6990 Gov. Barbara Gobbi and so many Rotarians who helped make this a memorable conference. Among the many attending with this writer were past district governor (PDG) Robin and Susan Shelly, PDG Peter Verbeck, Sparkie Folkers, Ana Fornaris Gallagher and Tom Gallagher, Greg Martini, Lina Pinzon, Yoli Woodbridge, Ligia Corredor, Jay and Mara Almeida, Alma Rita Alvarez, Manohar Mahajan, Norisa Glickman, Cori Gittner, Shirley Pardon, and Macel Zangger.
Until next time, share your time and talents, count your blessings, and make a difference.
