A Safe Haven for Newborns always attracts the most generous supporters and the Anthony Abraham Foundation is high on that list as the Gala’s Title Sponsor. After taking place online last year, this year’s affair was a welcomed return to n ain-person affair on October 22 at the Hilton Miami Downtown. Founder and CEO Nick Silverio was proud to report that last year’s ASHFN gala attracted more than 350 supporters celebrating the lives of over 360 precious newborns, and since that time the total has increased to 366 babies saved from abandonment and possible death. In the case of this organization, it is not just the babies that are saved.

You see, ASHFN also gives support and life changing help to all those mothers as well. Nick Silverio works 24/7 with no salary and inspires his one person staff and countless amazing donors and ambassadors who help support the organization with multiple fundraising events including the annual Gala, 5 K Run/Walk and a Golf Tournament. Nick was a recent guest on Gloria’s Gab LIVE. To view that show, visit https://www.facebook.com/Communitynewspapers/videos/450977480329492/ or

The Jr. Orange Bowl event calendar is ramping up having successfully launched the first event of the season on October 14 with its 23rd Annual Cross-Country Invitational at Larry and Penny Thompson Park. More than a thousand youth athletes competed, representing both middle and high schools from across Miami-Dade. This is just one of many events during the festival year providing young people a way to showcase their athletic ability and/or talents in everything from creative writing to international golf and tennis events. Upcoming events on the Junior Orange Bowl’s docket include the December 11 Miracle on the Mile Holiday Parade and Celebration and the International Tennis Championship.

Halloween weekend kicked off with Paws4You’s 12th Annual Howl-O-Ween at Pinecrest Gardens and the Coral Gables Woman’s Club Haunted House Halloween on October 29. More on both of those in the next issue but you can bet the funds raised will save man’s best friend at Paws4You rescue and provide kids with healthy smiles at the Coral Gables Woman’s Club “Free” Children’s Dental Clinic.

Of course, the Coral Gables Woman’s Club has had many events in October including a concert mixer featuring the Frost School of Music Jazz Sextet with Bailey Grogan at the clubhouse on October 12. Funds raised that night were directed to Camp Boggy Creek, the GFWC FL’s President’s Project. In addition, the CocoPlum Woman’s Club held a Fashion Show fundraiser for Camp Boggy Creek with participation by several District 11 clubs including CGWC.

For those not in the know, Camp Boggy Creek provides life changing experiences for Florida’s children, those who are dealing with debilitating diseases and more, a chance to safely enjoy a camp experience and the Florida Federation of Women’s Clubs and our local District 11 clubs are all about lending their support. Aside from all the above mentioned events, on October 19, the Gables Club met to sew curtains and learn more about Camp Boggy Creek from FFWC District 11’s President’s Project Chair Jena Staly and a mother whose child has been fortunate to attend weekends with the family at the Camp. Linda Hartwell brought material to be used for curtains requested by the Camp and after the program, the members got to work cutting the fabric. The club is also making bears and afghans that are given to each camper. Anyone wanting to donate to these efforts may email martibueso@gmail.com. Marti Bueso chairs this project for CGWC.

Next up for the CGWC is their monthly Gringo Bingo on November 9 at Clutch Burger with proceeds going to the club and the Alzheimer’s Association. Major sponsor for this month is attorney Lillian Ser. Alzheimer’s has touched the lives of so many including Lillian’s mom and CGWC Past President Arey Ruiz’ father and this writer’s grandfather all of whom passed away from the disease. To RSVP for this event, email gloria@cnews.net.

By the way, the Annual Alzheimer’s Walk is scheduled for November 19, at FIU Riccardo Silva Stadium 11310 SW 14th Street. Registration starts at 8 a.m. For information go to alz.org/walk.

Until next time, keep making each day count and share an act of kindness.
