Two remarkable events are coming up soon and both benefit programs that are life changing.
On Oct. 28, A Safe Haven for Newborns (ASHFN) will hold its annual fundraising gala at the Intercontinental Miami to benefit the non-profit’s mission of saving the lives of babies at risk for abandonment and possible death. At last count, the number of infants saved is 381.
A Safe Haven for Newborns founder and CEO Nick Silverio was a recent guest on my Gloria’s Gab LIVE show to talk about the annual gala, the 2024 timed 5K Run/Walk, the annual golf tournament also in 2024, as well as an app that students can used to volunteer for the non-profit that has been a tremendous success.

As for the Rotary Club of Coral Gables — a Cinema Night at the Coral Gables Art Cinema on Nov. 5, 5-9 p.m., will benefit Amber’s Room, at Liberty City. RCCG is partnering with T. Willard Fair and the Urban League of Greater Miami in an effort to change the trajectory of the kids in Liberty City with an initiative known as We Rise.
The movie being shown is the award-winning documentary I Will Soar. This film biography of Coach T.J. Jackson from Atlantic High School in Delray Beach tells the story of one city, one high school and one coach who brought them all together and sent nearly his entire team to college. You will find it an amazing, uplifting story of courage, determination, and resilience.
Joining guests for the event will be the writer/director Jane Swanko and the singer featured in the movie, Tomey Sellers.
Through the efforts of RCCG thus far, these children have risen to grade level reading scores in just 90 days. “Teach a child to read and you open up the world. Teach them to play as a team and they can conquer the world.” That is what this program is all about.
In other outreach efforts, on Sept. 30, for the National Day of Service, Coral Gables Woman’s Club members delivered non-perishable food members donated to The Caring Place (formerly Miami Rescue Mission and Broward Outreach Center). The food donations weighed approximately 1,400 pounds and were valued at $1,038.
Lianner Navarro, senior community development associate at The Caring Place, met with the CGWC president Ruth Martinez and members including Kristina Jackson, Carol Horkowitz, Margaret Romero and Meredeth McKissick.
Lianner provided the women with a behind-the-scenes tour of The Caring Place facility that currently houses the homeless. They serve 280-300 meals per day to the residents of the facility, the homeless and people with food insecurity.
The club’s Fall/Winter 2023 initiatives include collecting needed hygiene items in Mission Hope Bags and a special project “Pack the Pantry” to take place Nov. 18, when 500 low-income families will participate in a drive by in Miami Gardens during which a turkey, food box and hygiene supplies will be placed in the trunk of their cars.
On Oct. 4 during the CGWC general membership meeting, a team from Special Collections and Archives of the Miami-Dade County Public Library System returned to give members an update on archiving the club’s 100 years of history.
Stephanie Garcia and Margarita Mirabal are going to show the progress they have made digitizing the club’s history with a focus on the items on display for the club’s Centennial Gala on Dec. 2, an event you will not want to miss. For tickets, visit Eventbrite by Nov. 1 for an early bird price of $200 per person.
The Special Collections Team was able to obtain a generous $5,000 grant from the Coral Gables Community Foundation to help subsidize the cost of digitizing all of CGWC’s materials. In the future, the newly renovated Coral Gables Branch Library will host events in support of this project with members of Special Collections and the CGWC. This series of presentations will highlight the history of the organization and its building, its use as the city’s first library, the club’s impact, and how this collection was cared for by MDCPLS and digitized.
