Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

It has been a long time since a charity golf tournament has been held and golfers are ready to get back in the swing. After a year’s hiatus, A Safe Haven for Newborns tournament is back at Doral on Friday, May 14th. Not to worry, COVID protocols are still in place, so things will be a little different but a hardworking committee chaired by Gina Perez is hoping to make it as much fun as ever. Sponsorships are available and it is never too early to put together your foursome for the event. As always, proceeds will help Nick Silverio, ASHFN founder and CEO, save lives of precious babies and help pregnant women and new mothers in distress. Find out more about the organization’s mission on my Facebook Live show, Gloria’s Gab LIVE, Monday, April 19, at 10 a.m. when Nick will be my guest. Speaking of organizations doing great work, the Rotary Club of Coral Gables continues to make a positive impact through community service. In fact, RCCG has recently been named Chapman Partnership’s 2021 Volunteer of the Year “Virtual Pioneers” winner. You see, when Covid protocols made in person volunteering a challenge, Rotarians started virtual bingo games with people at Chapman Partnership. Chapman would bring in small groups for bingo on Zoom and then rotate them out and call on others. Rotarians including Past President Sally Baumgartner, Yoli Woodbridge, Frank Sexton and long time Rotarian Joan Reitsma were among the many volunteering their time, providing prizes and calling the bingo games virtually on a regular basis.

In other news, congratulations go out to two South Miami students and one South Dade student who are winners in C-SPAN’s national 2021 StudentCam competition. The two students from South Miami Middle School were Vincent Granados and Max Molitor, who will receive $250 as honorable mention winners for the documentary, “Mission Unaccomplished: The Battle to Protect Veterans’ Healthcare.” Additionally, Coral Reef Senior High School student, Paola Perez, will also receive $250 as an honorable mention winner for the documentary, “It’s Social Security, Stupid!” C-SPAN’s StudentCam competition, now in its 17th year, invited all middle and high school students to submit a short documentary. C-SPAN, in cooperation with cable television partners, wanted students to get involved in the national discussion on current challenges our country faces and came up with an appropriate theme: “Explore the issue you most want the president and new Congress to address in 2021.” Despite the challenges brought on by the pandemic, the contest received more than 2,300 entries from students across the country.

On the cultural front, South Florida PBS continues to bring us amazing programming and coming up on April 5th, 9 p.m., is the premiere of Ken Burns and Lynn Novick’s latest documentary, HEMINGWAY. PBS arranged a Zoom discussion with Ken and Lynn in March with a small group which was such a privilege for this writer. Like most everyone, this writer is a huge fan of anything Ken Burns does. You will not want to miss this Hemingway documentary premiering on South Florida PBS’ WPBT and WXEL on April 5th, at 9 PM. In three two-hour episodes, HEMINGWAY covers the rise and fall of that great author whose life was complicated. In his final years, he became a chronic alcoholic, suffered traumatic brain injuries and serious mental illness. In 1961, Hemingway died by suicide. While only 61 at the time of his death, he left behind a massive body of artistic work. This series is narrated by long-time collaborator Peter Coyote. It includes an all-star cast of actors bringing Hemingway (voiced by Jeff Daniels), his friends and family to life. Through letters to and from his four wives—voiced by Meryl Streep, Keri Russell, Mary-Louise Parker and Patricia Clarkson—the film reveals Hemingway at his most romantic and his most vulnerable. People can register for one or more of the various virtual events at www.pbs.org/hemingwayevents.

During March the GFWC Coral Gables Woman’s Club was busy with a blood drive, bra collections for Free the Girls, fundraisers for the children’s dental clinic and bidding a fond farewell to longtime member, Susie Tilson. Susie taught both my daughters and countless others over decades at Pinecrest Elementary and will be moving up to Punta Vedra. Since most everyone had had both vaccinations for COVID, a dozen or so convened before she left to wish her well. Among the crowd were President Ruth Martinez, Past Presidents Barbara Lapsley, Mayra Dominguez, and Linda Hartwell, to mention a few. She will no doubt join a GFWC club and will be seeing her old friends at GFWC Fl conventions in the future.

Finally, Norma Jean Abraham will host A Charity Bazaar at Chateau Morocco, 4891 SW 76th St, Miami on Friday and Sat., April 9 & 10, from 10 a.m. – 6 p.m. Save the date! Proceeds will benefit The Women’s Fund

Until next time, keep making each day count, share an act of kindness every day and stay safe.
