In person events are coming back and people are thirsty for the opportunity to gather in person. After a year of having to postpone and cancel fundraisers, A Safe Haven for Newborns held their Annual Golf Tournament at Trump National Resort. Held on May 14, there were 26 foursomes participating for an amazing day of golf for a great cause. As of this writing, the numbers were not calculated but you can be sure it was a great success. More on this next time.
That same weekend of May 14th, the General Federation of Women’s Clubs Florida held its Spring Convention in Orlando. Members from most of the 193 clubs from around the state gathered to share projects and be recognized for their efforts with a 50’s theme adding hilarity to the fun weekend. There are 11 clubs in South Florida that make up District 11 and all make a tremendous positive impact on our community. A special honor went to Coral Gables Woman’s Club, a club that has members who reside and/or work in Doral and all over South Florida. The Club won Outstanding Club of the Year for the State in their Category. This writer was also honored to represent District 11 as its Volunteer of the Year.
Speaking of the Coral Gables Woman’s Club, their May 8th Mother’s Day Tea was an overwhelming success after a one year gap and despite a limited capacity because of COVID protocols. With a sell out crowd, the affair raised more than $6,000.00 to provide much needed free dental care for Miami-Dade children who fall between the cracks in our healthcare system. Guests enjoyed an afternoon of shopping, music and a fabulous tea catered by club member Rita Tennyson, whose company, R Catering actually catered my daughter’s wedding. Co chairing the event were Denise Valluerca and Iris Segui with lots of help from their committee: Lorena Holguin, Past President Arely Ruiz, President Ruth Martinez, Treasurer Nancy Desmangles, Kristina Jackson and this writer. Of course, lots of other club members pitched in to help as well as student volunteers from Coral Gables High School. The Club was most grateful for the community support from top sponsors: Brett McKnight Lapsley (in memorium), New York Life, and Dr Iris Torres as well as in-kind sponsors Admari Tea, HV Designs, Miami’s Community Newspapers and R Catering and so many others who donated to the silent auction and more..
Support also came from GFWC District 11, many of whom were also at the GFWC FL Convention. Among the guests at the Tea from District 11 were The Woman’s Club President Shirley Pardon, President of the Woman’s Club of Coconut Grove Virginia Yermoli, Noreen Timoney, Anita Jenkins, Metris Batts, Maribel Fruitstone, GFWC District 11 Past District Directors Elizabeth Kourtesis Fisher, Norma Cooper, Graciela de Garcia and Lynda Randolph and current District Director Brenda Merrill.
