Autumn in high gear with galas, Jr. OB and more

Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

This past weekend, A Safe Haven for Newborn’s Gala was held at the Hilton Miami Downtown with an amazing program as well as a fabulous auction both in person and online.

Founder and CEO Nick Silverio was proud to share that last year’s ASHFN gala attracted more than 350 supporters celebrating the lives of over 360 precious newborns and since that time, the total has increased to 366 babies saved from abandonment and possible death.

In the case of this organization, it is not just the babies that are saved. You see, ASHFN also gives support and lifechanging help to all those mothers as well. Nick Silverio works 24/7 with no salary and inspires his one person staff and countless amazing donors and ambassadors who help support the organization with multiple fundraising events including the annual Gala, 5K Run/Walk and a golf tournament.

Nick was a recent guest on Gloria’s Gab LIVE. To view that show, visit www.facebook.com/Communitynewspapers/videos/450977480329492/ or YouTube: www.youtube.com/watch?v=JmIq_2zbwtI.

The Jr. Orange Bowl is ramping up having successfully launched the first event of the season on Oct. 14, with its 23rd annual Cross Country Invitational at Larry and Penny Thompson Park. More than a thousand young athletes competed, representing both middle and high schools from across Miami-Dade.

The is just one of many events during the festival year providing young people a way to showcase their athletic ability and/talents in everything from creative writing to international golf and tennis. Upcoming events on the Junior Orange Bowl’s docket include the Miracle on the Mile Holiday Parade and Celebration, Dec. 11, and the International Tennis Championship.

Halloween weekend began with Paws4You’s 12th annual Howl-O-Ween at Pinecrest Gardens and the Coral Gables Woman’s Club Haunted House Halloween on Oct. 29. More on both of those in the future but you can bet the funds raised will save man’s best friend at Paws4You rescue and provide kids with healthy smiles at the Coral Gables Woman’s Club “Free” Children’s Dental Clinic.

Of course, the Coral Gables Woman’s Club has had many events in October including a concert mixer featuring the Frost School of Music Jazz Sextet featuring Bailey Grogan at clubhouse on Oct. 12. Funds raised that night were directed to Camp Boggy Creek, the GFWC FL’s President’s Project.

Speaking of the camp that provides life-changing experiences for children with debilitating diseases and more, GFWC District 11 clubs are all about lending their support. On Oct. 19, the Gables Club met to sew curtains and learn more about Camp Boggy Creek from FFWC District 11’s President’s Project chair Jena Staly and a mother whose child has been fortunate to attend weekends with the family at the camp.

Linda Hartwell brought material to be used for curtains requested by the camp, and after the program the members got to work cutting the fabric. The club also is making bears and afghans that are given to each camper. Anyone wanting to donate to this effort may send email to martibueso@gmail.com. Marti Bueso chairs this project for CGWC.

In other happenings, the fourth Tuesday of every month is Game Night at Bay 13 bringing together Gables Rotarians and members of the Coral Gables Woman’s Club for their monthly joint charity event. Always fun and good for laughs, tickets for the event are only $30 for drink, snacks with lots of great prizes and games galore. RSVP recommended to gloria@cnews.net.

Next up for the CGWC is the monthly Gringo Bingo on Nov. 9 at Clutch Burger with proceeds going to the club and the Alzheimer’s Association. Major sponsor for this month is attorney Lillian Ser. Alzheimer’s has touched the lives of so many, including Lillian’s mom and CGWC past president Arey Ruiz’ father as well as this writer’s grandfather, all of who passed away from the disease. By the way, the annual Alzheimer’s Walk is scheduled for Nov. 19, at FIU Riccardo Silva Stadium, 11310 SW 14 St. Registration starts at 8 a.m. For more information, go to alz.org/walk.

That same weekend, starting Friday, Nov. 18, is the annual SMARTRIDE, a two-day, 165 mile bike ride from Miami to Key West for which CGWC handles two pit stops lead by club member Carmen Suarez. Funds from this annual event, founded years ago by Glenn Weinzimmer, are directed to several HIV/Aids clinics throughout the state.

Until next time, keep making each day count and share an act of kindness every day.
