On October 24, SIME Realty blanketed much of our immediate South Florida area during the “Bake a Difference” event, a community driven fundraiser that involves family and friend groups setting up bake stands throughout Miami Dade and Broward counties in order to raise money and awareness for Nicklaus Children’s Hospital and its Comprehensive Epilepsy Program. The team at Sime Realty put in a lot of hours baking up all kinds of sweet treats for the bake sale. While Sally Harris set up a bake stand at the Quick Pick in Coral Gables, she met a lady very familiar with Miami Children’s who surprised her by writing a check on the spot for $500. As a team Sime’s group collected a total of $1,100 for charity and along with 40 additional bake stands together raised over $20,000. Bulla Gastrobar and the soon-to-be-opened Pisco Y Nazca helped raise awareness and funds for Global Water Brigades, an international, non-profit organization constructing clean water systems in Nicaragua, Honduras and Ghana, by serving bites at yet another successful fundraiser. The 5th Annual Water Party MIA, held at The Four Seasons in Brickell on November 13, offered guests endless cocktails generously sponsored by Botran Rum, Finalandia Vodka, Herradura Tequila, Mahou Beer and wine from the wine boutique store Afficionados Brickell; plus delectable bites from Bulla Gastrobar & Pisco y Nasca as well as two food stations courtesy of the culinary team at the Four Seasons. Entertainment included music, a silent auction and more with all the proceeds directed to Global Water Brigades to benefit the Community of El Hatillo, Nicaragua home to 336 people, 67 families currently lacking access to clean safe water.
In other charitable outreach efforts, Rotarians are once again looking to raise funds for veterans projects at the Autoverks Classic Car Show is Saturday, November 21, 6 – 10 p.m. at 8700 SM 133 St. Held the third Saturday of each month, admission is free to this fun-filled evening whose proceeds benefit the Rotary Club of Coral Gables veterans programs. Zero Defect Band will be returning with music that is sure to make you want to dance. Donations are taken for refreshments. Of course, always a big draw for adults and kids alike is the used Fire truck that Rotarian Fred Baddour bought for fun. It actually works and everyone loves taking a shot at knocking down road barriers with the fire engine’s water hose.
In other non profit news, Ocean Waves Quilt Guild’s Community Quilts Chairperson, Geraldine Tucker who also serves on the board of Sunrise Community visited the Coral Gables Woman’s Club’s November 4th meeting at the invitation of the organization’s Vice President of Development, Margaret Feldman. Geraldine has been on the Sunrise Board for the past 30 years and believes wholeheartedly in supporting community organizations who provide meaningful services in the community which, of course, also ties in with Sunrise Community’s mission of providing people with disabilities the assistance and support necessary to enable them to live valued lives in the community. That said, Geraldine brought with her several beautifully crafted handmade lap quilts that were presented to the Club for its children dental clinic to keep children receiving free dental care happy and warm during their visits. They will certainly make for a comforting touch. The talented ladies who make these quilts put a lot of love into each of these one-of-a-kind quilts and Dental Clinic Director Dr. Iris Torres was delighted with the generous donation.
Until next time, keep making each day count.
