The Catholic Church and our own Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church in Doral is celebrating Jubilee Year, the 2,025th Anniversary of the Incarnation of Jesus Christ. Thus, the year 2025 offers various jubilee events for those traveling to the Vatican but also for pilgrims in Miami who cannot travel to Rome. Archbishop Thomas Wenski has designated the Our Lady of Guadalupe (OLG) , the Cathedral of Miami and other popular Catholic places in the Archdiocese as special places of prayer for Jubilee Year pilgrims. Just recently, OLG was also the starting place the Archbishop’s Charity Bike Ride that draws hundreds of motorcycle riders from around the state to make the trip en masse south after the Archbishop celebrated mass and blessed the bikes and the riders. Then, it was time to kick up the stands and they were off, on their way to the Harley Davison location in South Dade where a big party was held to end the ride. To also celebrate this Jubilee Year at Our Lady of Guadalupe, the church held a fundraising gala on February 21, 2025, at the church hall. In other news, the Women Voice Network held a mixer sponsored by Iris Garcia at VIVO at Dolphin Mall on January 30. The social gathering brought together people interested in learning more about the non-profit’s mission of helping to economically empower women who are victims of domestic abuse and human trafficking. WVN founder and Executive Director Iris Garcia has volunteered her services and expertise over for years helping survivors rebuild through education, job training, and support systems and shared her passion with those attending including Danay Arritola-Rodriguez (CNO of Larkin Hospital’s Palm Spring Campus), Patty Vila, Kristina Jackson and Muzzy Jackson. Plans for an upcoming fundraiser will help to underwrite online classes to provide skill sets needed to help victims acquire better paying jobs such a computer training, English as a second language, accounting and finance and more. On February 8, the Doral Contemporary Art Museum (DORCAM) presented another great program, “LA OTRA ORILLA” , with Leonardo Padron featured as part of the DORCAM Book Club Series of literary conversations about Miami led by acclaimed author and moderator Camilo Pino. On the festival front, the Junior Orange Bowl continues its many events. They are looking for volunteers for its Sports Ability Games on Thursday, February 27th, at Palmer Trinity School. The Way Forward’s Lobster Feast was recently held at Coral Reef Yacht Club. Formerly known as The Woody Foundation, The Way Forward is a non-profit founded by the Beckham family after son, Woody, was paralyzed in a rugby match at age 22. Seeing the need to offer opportunities for others like Woody, the family created a foundation with a mission of enhancing the lives of those living with paralysis. Most recently The Way Forward Foundation helped with the wheelchair division of the Miami Marathon on February 2, and has a lineup of events to come, from a golf tournament at Top Golf to its Annual Fishing Tournament and, of course, the Woodystock Music Festival. The foundation’s executive director, Lucy Foerster, was a recent guest on Gloria’s Gab LIVE to talk about their history, events and programs and the family foundation’s support for their numerous outreach efforts.
