Dadeland-Pinecrest Rotarians keep members abreast of important issues

At the September 13 meeting of the Miami Dadeland Pinecrest Rotary Club, members heard from FIU Professor and South Miami Mayor Phillip Stoddard whose topic was “What You Need to Know About the FPL Issue.” This timely program will be followed by another on the same topic on October 11 by a representative of Florida Power and Light who will discuss a contrasting point of view.

Yet another interesting upcoming program is scheduled for October 25th, featuring University of Miami Psychology Professor Jennifer Britton, who will explain “How the Brain Functions.”

This Rotary Club, one of many clubs in District 6990, is now concluding its Summer Membership Drive. The club is always looking for members willing to serve and fill open classifications including Journalist, Dentist, Veterinarian, Optometrist, Chiropractor, Psychologist, Publicist, Computer Technician, Security Service Executive, Plumber, Printer, Architect and several Physician and so many Lawyer sub classifications. Comprised of professionals and business executives who reside and/or work in the Kendall/Pinecrest area, the Rotary Club of Miami Dadeland-Pinecrest meets for breakfast every month on the second and fourth Tuesday morning, 7:30 – 8:30, at the Dadeland Marriott Hotel, 9090 S. Dadeland Boulevard, to discuss community service projects and hear an interesting speaker. In other Rotary news, the Rotary Club of Coral Gables recently held an after hours fundraiser, hosted by Weston Rotarian Joe Marouf at his Bird Road/ SW 67th

Avenue Carolina Ale House location. Hundreds of dollars were raised to buy packaged toiletries for homeless veterans, one of many veterans projects Coral Gables Rotarians support organized by Club Past President, Yolanda Woodbridge.

The 5K Park Fest is just a few weeks away, on Saturday, October1st. This promises to be a great day of family fun at historic Virginia Key Key Park from 11 a.m. – 6 p.m. Visit www.5kparkfest.org for more information. Numerous charities are using this event to raise funds. To support your favorite charity, register for the walk and half of the fee will be directed to that charity with the other half support PARK Project Foundation.

A graduate of the University of Florida with a major in Spanish, Burns has an extensive background in advertising, marketing and reciprocal trade, travel , non profit consulting and management. Before joining Miami's Community Newspapers as a columnist and marketing specialist, Gloria was the Executive Director of the Jr. Orange Bowl Committee (6 yrs.) and first Executive Director of the Coral Gables Community Foundation (14 yrs.) and the Pinecrest Community Foundation (1 ½ yrs) . Burns' volunteer activities led her to become a columnist for Community Newspapers writing Gloria’s Gab, that focuses on the non-profit activity, and a host of an online show, Gloria's Gab LIVE. In addition, Gloria participates in numerous other charitable events and is a member of the Business Forum Group, Profit Inc., the Greater Miami Festival & Events Association and the Coral Gables Chamber of Commerce. In other volunteer activity, Gloria helps Miami Christian School with fund-raising and PR; is an Ambassador and volunteers for events for A Safe Haven for Newborns. She is an active member of the Music Ministry at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church where she enjoys singing in the choir every weekend.
