Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

Denny;s Orange Blossom Football Classic back for a second year after a 43 years gap.

Having been reestablished to enhance Historically Black Colleges & Universities exposure in our community, it also promises a great weekend of activities. To begin, there will be a Commissioners welcome reception and Kick Off Luncheon at the JW Marriott Miami Turnberry Resort in Aventura with Miami Dade Commission Vice Chairman Oliver Gilbert, III. The Luncheon celebrates the 30th Anniversary of the Year of the Woman with three honorees and that is just the start. Labor Day weekend in South Florida will be one to remember as Florida A & M will play Jackson State at Hard Rock Stadium on September 4. Look for a great event at the University of Miami Wasco Center with the OBC’s Battle of the Bands with the two college bands as well as other high school bands preforming. This will be the best show in town on Saturday, Sept. 3, 6 – 10 p.m. OBC’s Executive Director Kendra Bulluck was my guest on Gloria Gab LIVE July 18 to share all the great activities planned for this great football weekend. For the scoop on all the weekend events, watch the show at https://www.facebook.com/Communitynewspapers/videos/1791274084559787/ or visit www.orangeblossomclassic.com/

Centennial celebrations are certainly to be applauded and GFWC District 11’s own Woman’s Club of Hialeah will be celebrating 100 years with support from clubs from all over the county. On Saturday, August 27, 2022, the Woman’s Club of Hialeah will mark their 100th Anniversary with a brunch at Hialeah Race Track, located at 2200 East 4th Avenue in Hialeah. Club President Barbara Hassall promises an exciting day that will include trivia games, an installation, good food and a Lucky Ticket auction to benefit Camp Boggy Creek. The fun begins at 10:30 a.m. and ends at 1:30 p.m. Tickets are $30 for adults and $20 for children under 12. Tickets may be ordered through Eventbrite. For more information, contact Barbara at Barbara.Hassall01@gmail.com.

By the way, Camp Boggy Creek is the General Federation of Women’s Clubs Florida President’s Project. Like so many District 11 clubs, Coral Gables Woman’s Club has already done a Gringo Bingo fundraiser in July to support this non profit camp located in Eustis. Camp Boggy Creek offers a one-week camp experience during which children with a variety of health issues have a chance to come together for fun with others experiencing similar challenges. Every week, a different group is targeted to visit the camp for free and some of our local members have even volunteered there. Look for more events supporting this great program in the future.

Speaking of fundraisers, on July 20, the GFWC Coral Gables Woman’s Club held a mini fundraiser for the club’s free children’s dental clinic with an art class at their clubhouse organized by Carol Horkowitz. Eleni Morales, a talented Junior at Archimedean Upper Conservatory in Miami, loves to paint and taught the group how to replicate on canvas a painting she had done for her mom. While many were creating their masterpiece paintings, Theresa Gilmore, an amazing acupuncturist, raised additional funds attaching her Swarovski crystal ear seeds to members for a donation to the clinic.

In other club news, on July 7, 2022, the Rotary Club of Coral Gables held their annual installation luncheon during which Ana Fournaris and her new board were sworn into office at the Hyatt Regency Coral Gables. Michael Kesti, RI District 6990 Governor, was on hand to officiate over the swearing in of the officers and board. Following Ana’s swearing in, Kesti invited Ana’s daughter, Nicole, to do the honors of attaching her president’s pin. Among the officers serving for the upcoming year will be President-Elect Frank Sexton, who is also chairing the RCCG Chili Cook Off on October 30; Treasurer, Bill Quesenberry; Secretary, Sally Baumgartner; and Immediate Past President Nicolas Eterovic.

Speaking of the Rotary Club of Coral Gables Chili Cook Off, this event held the day before Halloween will be a fun way to celebrate the holiday with kids and adults in costumes with chef’s coming up with great chili and creatively decorated tents. Look for many returning chefs including the Coral Gables Woman’s Club and Miami’s Community Newspapers. Those interested in signing up for or sponsoring Rotary’s Chili Cook Off, please visit www.chilichillin.com. If all else fails, email gloria@cnews.cnet.

Until next time, keep making each day count and share an act of kindness every day.
