Coral Gables Woman’s Club’s Gringo Gringo Bingo fundraiser hosted by Clutch Burger in the Gables on May 3 was another successful event raising more than $1,600 that the club will share this month with the Afghan refugee effort through RAA.

Hundreds of Afghan refugees who worked with our government as translators, etc., after being held in camps for a few months for clearance, are helped by the government for 90 days and then on their own.

That’s when the non-profit Refugee Alliance Project (RAA) steps in and gets groups to adopt a family to help them acclimate, get children in school, deal with healthcare, finances, etc.

Coral Gables Woman’s Club member Henryka Manes also is a member of the Rotary Club of Coral Gables. Manes works with the non-profit Ecoworks and has experience needed to spearhead an effort for CGWC to adopt a family with members taking on specific needs based on their skill sets. Certainly, since CGWC owns and operates a free children’s dental clinic, helping refugee children needing that service ties in well.

A shout out to this month’s event sponsors: Law Offices of JeromeKavulich, EZ Title Services and 1st Empire Elite Financial as well as regular donations from Lynn Bauer and Dr. Hal Wanless.

The following Saturday, CGWC held yet another fundraiser but this time for the club’s free children’s dental clinic. Their “Breakfast at Tiffany’s” themed pre Mothers Day Tea was a sellout.

Guests enjoyed live music, unlimited bubbly and specialty Mojitos courtesy of Bacardi, and a silent auction with such great prizes as a weekend packages at the Westin Washington, DC, City Center and the Intercontinental Hotel Doral as well as some beautiful jewelry, parties at Seasons 52, a burger a month certificate for a year from Clutch Burger, to mention a few. Kudos to event co-chair Iris Segui and Kristina Jackson and auction chair Kayla Blake.

In other news, the Emmy award-winning producer, author, photographer and Cancer survivor, Pat San Pedro, was a recent guest on my Gloria’s Gab LIVE show to talk about her first photography exhibition. Her exhibit, titled “Discover Your Doorway” is an inspired exhibit you are sure to enjoy. It will run through May 23 at Gally by Art Labbe, 2522 Ponce de Leon Blvd. in Coral Gables. Visit www.DiscoverYourDoorway.com. Finally, coming up this fall, Always Remember will premiere in South Florida Thanksgiving weekend after several interruptions due to the pandemic. Mark your calendars for this definitive new musical about the Cuban-American experience that will be held at the South Miami Dade Cultural Arts Center.

Developed over 20 years, this epic full-scale work by Cuban-born American Marilyn Morales follows a family’s struggle to leave Castro’s Cuba — and reunite after being separated by forces beyond their control. This musical, that is uplifting and enlightening, speaks to the ageless plight of all refugees with an intriguing narrative, rich musical score and bold dialogue. This will be a great show for the entire family and will touch the hearts of everyone, especially those who have experienced leaving everything for freedom.

Until next time, keep making each day count and share an act of kindness every day.
