A Safe Haven for Newborns founder Nick Silverio was recently flown to Eternal Word Television Network headquarters in Nashville to appear on the “At Home with Jim and Joy” Show. EWTN, now entering its 35th year, is the largest religious media network in the world.
This was an amazing opportunity for Nick to share the success of A Safe Haven for Newborns with EWTN’s global audience noting that his organization just saved its 265th baby. Following that broadcast, Nick has received calls from all over. In fact, at a recent planning meeting for the Miami-based organization’s upcoming gala, October 21, Nick took a call from an individual in Hawaii who wanted information after seeing that show. The calls continue coming in as A Safe Haven for Newborns spreads its programs to numerous other states – and now shares its mission with the world.
Speaking of global impacts, Rotary International is one of the most celebrated service organizations in the world for its impact in so many areas, from polio eradication to potable water, and more. Sadly however, the organization is mourning the loss of Rotary International President-elect Sam F. Owori who died unexpectedly July 13 due to complications from surgery.
Sam was a member of the Rotary Club Kampala, Uganda, for 38 years. Many local Rotarians heard speak at the recent RI Convention in Atlanta. He was the chief executive officer of the Institute of Corporate Governance of Uganda, whose mission is to promote excellence in corporate governance principles and practice in the region by 2020. Previously, he was executive director of the African Development Bank and managing director of Uganda Commercial Bank Ltd., and director of Uganda Development Bank. He has also served as corporation secretary of the Central Bank of Uganda.
On another sad note, Stephen Musolino passed away just months after his beloved wife. Stephen Musolino, of Casa Linda Marble & Tile, was a pioneer in the ceramic tile and marble industry with offices in Doral. Some may recall Stephen was an honoree for the 2013 Doral Business Council Legacy Awards Gala where he was praised for his entrepreneurial spirit and impact on the community. He will be missed.
On a happier note, Profic Inc., one of the oldest business networking groups in South Florida, held a visitors day lunch at 94th Aero Squadron July 20 welcoming lots of new faces. President Enrique Yunis greeted a dozen or so guests while several members shared testimonials. Among the members and guests enjoying the day were Don VanOrsdel, Mike Sutta, Jose and Stacy Alonso, Dr. Joe Briggle, LaWanda Loftus, Jerry Kavulich, Andy Gonzalez, Darryl Rosenbaum, Robert Beans, Hernando Valenzuela, Kemp Mobley, Gabriel Silva, and Rosemary Guilfoyle, to mention a few.
City Place at Doral has been hopping with the grand openings of more and more businesses and great eateries. The Doral Business Council has taken advantage of several such affairs including a great networking affair at Kings Bowl and most recently a Quick Connect breakfast event at Rusty Bucket restaurant. Although Rusty Bucket typically opens its doors at 11 a.m., the restaurant kindly hosted a 7:30 a.m. networker and served the most delicious egg dish with cheese and spinach, as well as a bounty of other breakfast delights. Look for more of these DBC events and enjoy the benefits of membership by calling 305 470-9597.
Finally, enjoy the last days of summer with no school and lighter-than-usual traffic. School starts for some as early as August 21. Fall cannot be far away!
