Football season is around the corner and on Labor Day weekend, we will have the Orange Blossom Football Classic. Florida A & M will play Jackson State at Hard Rock Stadium, the OBC’s Battle of the Bands with the two college bands as well as other high school bands at Wasco Center at UM, and more. OBC’s Executive Director Kendra Bulluck was my guest on Gloria Gab LIVE July 18 to share all the great activities planned for this great football weekend. For the scoop on all the weekend events, watch the show at https://www.facebook.com/Communitynewspapers/videos/1791274084559787/ or visit www.orangeblossomclassic.com/
While several non profits are collecting school supplies for those in need, schools are preparing for a year of in person learning and sports. Think about recycling,,, band instruments and sports items are always in demand. Call our local schools to donate. At Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church, parishioners are collecting backpacks for children in need throughout the diocese. If our readers care to help, donations may be dropped off after mass or at the church office.
Speaking of Our Lady of Guadalupe, the Youth Groups at OLG are back. Look for information on the Young Adult Groups (18 years and older) at instagram.com/etm_olg and for the younger people in high school (9th-12th Grade) at instagram.com/openarmsguadalupe
In other school related news, Members of the GFWC Coral Gables Woman’s Club raised more than $1,800 at their August 2nd Gringo Bingo at Clutch Burger with proceeds being shared to raise funds for the teachers wish lists at Dr. Marvin Dunn Academy and Tucker Elementary. Sponsors for this and the next event include Lynn Bauer and Hall Wanless, EZ Title Services and 1st Empire Elite Financial and the Law Office of Jerome Kavulich. The club is already planning for the September 6th Gringo Bingo and has added yet another sponsor, Nero Immigration Law. Proceeds for that event will be shared with National Alopecia Areata Foundation (NAAF), a charity this event has supported since the first year. Look for more fun with Doral resident Steven Bradley (owner of Clutch Burger that hosts the events) emceeing the games and DJ Germain providing the music to add to the party atmosphere.
In addition, the CGWC is partnering with the Rotary Club of Coral Gables for what hopes to be a monthly game night at Bay 13 with the first one to be held on August 23. The two clubs will use the proceeds for fund various charitable projects each month. Tickets @ $30 will include game play with hourly door prizes, one glass of wine, beer or soda and some munchies. This is a great way to meet new people and support our community. To RSVP, email gloria@cnews.net.
Doral Rotarians are encouraged to visit the Rotary Club of Coral Gables that meets evert Thursday at the Hyatt Regency Coral Gables, 12:15 p.m. – 1:30 p.m., each week. They offer an amazing list of great speakers. Lunch is $40. On July 28th, the group got an economic update from Tony Villamil, of The Washington Group. There is no better person to provide that outlook and Villamil happily fielded numerous questions after his presentation. The Rotary Club of Coral Gables meets every Thursday, 12:15 p.m. – 1:30 p.m. , at the Hyatt Regency Coral Gables with a great lunch for $40. Guests and visiting Rotarians are welcomed.
Until next time, keep making each day count and share an act of kindness every day.
