This fall has come with opportunities to support great programs and our generous community has stepped up. A Safe Haven for Newborns (ASHFN) always attracts great support and the Anthony Abraham Foundation is high on that list as this year’s Gala’s Title Sponsor.

After being held online last year, the 2022 affair was a welcomed return to an “in person” affair held Oct. 22 at the Hilton Miami Downtown. Founder and CEO Nick Silverio was proud to share that last year’s ASHFN gala attracted more than 350 supporters celebrating the lives of over 360 precious newborns and since that time, the total has increased to 366 babies saved from abandonment and possible death.

In the case of this organization, it is not just the babies that are saved. ASHFN also gives support and life-changing help to all those mothers as well. Nick Silverio works 24/7 with no salary and inspires his one person staff and countless amazing donors and ambassadors who help support the organization with multiple fundraising events including the annual Gala, 5K Run/Walk and a Golf Tournament. Nick was a recent guest on Gloria’s Gab LIVE.

The Junior Orange Bowl is ramping up having successfully launching the first event of the season on Oct. 14, with its 23rd annual Cross-Country Invitational at Larry and Penny Thompson Park. More than a thousand young athletes competed, representing both middle and high schools from across Miami-Dade County. The is just one of many events during the festival year providing young people a way to showcase their athletic ability and/ or talents in everything from creative writing to international golf and tennis events.

Upcoming events on the Junior Orange Bowl’s docket include the Miracle on the Mile Holiday Parade and Celebration, Dec. 11 and the International Tennis Championship.

Of course, the Coral Gables Woman’s Club has had many events in October prior to its Halloween Party. CGWC’s Arts and Culture chair Carol Horkowitz worked with Frost School of Music to present a concert mixer at clubhouse on Oct. 12, featuring the school’s Jazz Sextet with Bailey Grogan. Funds raised that night were directed to Camp Boggy Creek, the GFWC’s President’s Project.

In addition, the CocoPlum Woman’s Club held a Fashion Show Luncheon fundraiser for the Camp Boggy Creek. Chaired by Sue Nichols, the event was a great success thanks to Nichols’ committee: Jena Staly, Anita Jenkins, Barbara Wexler, Charlene Feldner. Pat Rivas, Kim Shain, Annie Goodrich Sorgie, Joyce Windhorst and Sara Warren.

Sheffield McIntosh coordinated the models: Magarita Botero, Gloria Burns, Norma Cooper, Vera Cooper, Donna Falana, Nori Glickman, Jennifer Grant, Amonta Konawitz, Leticia Mattheus, Dr. Rose Martin, Sue Nichols, Carol Nobles and Suzanne Santos.

For those not in the know, Camp Boggy Creek provides life changing experiences for children throughout Florida who are dealing with debilitating diseases and more, a chance to safely enjoy a camp experience and GFWC District 11 clubs are all about lending their support.

Aside from all the previously mentioned events, on Oct. 19, the Gables Club met to sew curtains and learn more about Camp Boggy Creek from FFWC District 11’s President’s Project chair Jena Staly and a mother whose child has been fortunate to attend weekends with the family at the camp.

Linda Hartwell brought material to be used for curtains requested by the camp and, after the program, the members got to work cutting the fabric. The club also is making bears and afghans that are given to each camper. Anyone wanting to donate to these efforts may contact Marti Bueso who chairs this project for CGWC at martibueso@gmail.com.

Next up for the CGWC is their monthly Gringo Bingo on Nov. 9, at Clutch Burger with proceeds going to the club and the Alzheimer’s Association. Major sponsor for this month is attorney Lillian Ser. Alzheimer’s has touched the lives of so many. The Annual Alzheimer’s Walk is scheduled for Nov. 19 at FIU’s Riccardo Silva Stadium 11310 SW 14 St. Registration starts at 8 a.m. For more information, go to alz.org/walk.

Until next time, keep making each day count and share an act of kindness every day.
