A new show for “Betty” and heart disease awareness month activities filled the calendar with fun events. Ugly Betty fans are enjoying the return this beloved character with a hilarious new show, Betty En NY (BENY).
On Feb. 5, Telemundo 51 presented a VIP screening of Betty En NY in collaboration with Florida National University, where the event was held, and The South Florida Hispanic Chamber of Commerce (SFLHCC).
Following the screening, guests were treated to a discussion with BENY series actress Jeimy Osorio and CEO of the SFLHCC Liliam Lopez, moderated by Telemundo reporter Leana Astorga.
This show targets a bi-lingual market and deals with self-confidence, family values, personal rejection, beauty inside and out, and triumph despite odds, all of which were on topic for the post screening panel Q and A. Among the many attending were members of the Coral Gables Woman’s Club, Business Forum in Doral, SFLHCC members, and more.
Speaking of the Hispanic Chamber, the SFLHCC’s Hispanic Women’s Society Network held its annual Fashionable Red Luncheon on Feb. 15, in support of Heart Disease Awareness Month.
The event, held onboard Carnival’s Victory, featured an informative program with an panel of cardiologists including: Dr. Miguel Diaz of Palmetto General Hospital; Dr. Joseph Lamelas of UHealth; Dr. Yadira Martinez of Nicklaus Children’s Hospital; and Dr. Juan Zambrano of Jackson South.
A sea of red dresses and hats for the ladies mixed with red ties for the men provided quite a sight for those looking on as the guests boarded the ship. Liliam Lopez with Nery Gonzalez and many others on her board of diretors always provide guests with a color theme that adds to the fun of the day.
In other Heart Month events included International Mall’s Annual Red Fashion Show Feb. 7, with some stunning red ball gowns and more. Sara Valega and her staff always create beautiful events and this was no exception, as it was such a treat for shoppers who enjoyed refreshments while viewing the show just outside of Macy’s.
Goodwill marked its 60th anniversary recently with VIP tours and its President & CEO David Landsberg (former publisher of The Miami Herald) for the media that certainly was an eye-opener for many. While most of us think of Goodwill for their stores and donation drop-off locations, few know how truly gigantic it is and how many people they help, educate, and employ.
Their corporate headquarters alone employs 1,100 people and manufactures military uniforms, U.S. flags used for military funerals, they launder hospital linens, and more. Best of all, Goodwill employs people with varying abilities. They even have a terrific band that will truly amaze and usually performs for scheduled tours which this writer would recommend for groups or businesses.
In other February happenings, Doral has new passive park thanks to a large donation from Millennia Atlantic University. Adjacent to MAU, this park is yet another great addition to the many in our city of Doral. Mayor J.C. Bermuda and the Doral City Council were on hand for the ribbon cutting and thanked MAU for its contribution to the city.
Not even taking a month off after their Chili Cook-Off on Feb. 24, Coral Gables Rotarians with support from the Coral Gables Woman’s Club is gearing up to host a Gringo Bingo event at Clutch Burger on Giralda Plaza on March 5, from 7 to 9 p.m.
Clutch Burger, which always has fun activities going on and a great menu, is generously proving food and drink. All the proceeds will benefit Coral Gables Rotary’s monthly bingo games for veterans at the VA Hospital. Many thanks to Ana and Steven Bradley who wanted to do something for the military and agreed to host this fundraiser.
Gables Rotarians, including two RCCG Past Presidents, Yolanda Woodbridge and Sally Baumgartner, as well as Aaron Glasser, Bonnie Blaire, Carol Alexander, George Reeves, and the Coral Gables High School’s Interact Club are committed to hosting monthly bingo games at the VA providing food, prizes, etc. For information on this event, email gloria@cnews.net.
Speaking of fun, A Safe Haven for Newborns is holding its 6th Annual Walk to Eliminate Infant Abandonment on Saturday, March 9, 2019, 7:30 am. (registration at Amelia Earhart Park, Pavilion I, at 401 East 66th Street in Hialeah). Thus far, this amazing organization founded by Nick Silver, has saved 297 babies and helped 5,000 pregnant women.
