On February 13, the Coral Gables Children’s Dental Clinic that serves children in need throughout Miami-Dade County will benefit from a Black & White Gala at the Coral Gables Woman’s Clubhouse, 1001 East Ponce de Leon Blvd. Beginning at 7 p.m., guests will enjoy an open bar, silent auction, passed hors d’oeuvres in a comfortable setting with sofas and high tops before moving into the next ballroom for dinner.
Those attending will then dine with a selection of Filet mignon or Mahi for only $75 per person. After dinner, it will be back to the other ballroom for desserts, dancing and more shopping. This is certainly the best deal in town for a great clinic that provides more than $225,000 in free care annually to those children who fall between the cracks in our healthcare system.
A few weeks later, February 27, another great affair is being planned by the Jr. Orange Bowl Committee chaired by Michelle Benitez-Bermudez at the Conrad Miami. Miami’s Community Newspapers will be honored at that event along with John and Pam Admire and the City of Miami Springs, all of whom have supported and helped the JOBC for decades. Also, girls ages 9 -15 are invited to participate in the Jr. Orange Bowl’s Queen’s Pageant. Pageant Chair, Isa Goenaga, advises four ambassadors will be selected to be part of the 2016 Royal Court at the finals on Sunday April 9. On the Rotary front, the Rotary Club of Miami Dadeland Pinecrest closes Rotary Awareness Month with a presentation on the newest South Florida Rotary committee, “Rotarians for Hope,” by David Mountford, President of Coconut Creek Rotary Club and chairperson of the committee. February is World Understanding Month and the club’s speaker on February 9 is WLRN’s Americas Reporter Tim Padgett, talking about “Cuba Today.” On February 23 Jeff Green, FBI Community Outreach Coordinator, will be the club’s speaker. He will talk about “Emerging Crime & Security Threats in the Miami area.” On March 9 the club will be visited by County Judge Steve Leifman whose topic is “Give People with Mental Illness Treatment, Not a Jail Cell.” Comprised of professionals and business executives who live and/or work in the Kendall/Pinecrest area, the Rotary Club of Miami Dadeland-Pinecrest meets for breakfast every month on the second and fourth Tuesday morning, 7:30-8:30, at the Dadeland Marriott Hotel, 9090 S. Dadeland Boulevard, to discuss community service projects and hear an interesting speaker. In other Rotary news, Gullivers’ Interact Club, sponsored by the Rotary Club of Coral Gables will be one of the groups entering the Rotary Club of Coral Gables inaugural Chili Cook Off on February 21, 2 – 6 p.m., at Ponce Circle Park just south of Miracle Mile on Ponce de Leon Blvd. in the Coral Gables. Admission is free to this event that features 2 live bands, giant bounce house and slide, various food vendors, and beer tastings. Make a donation of $5 for a wrist band to taste the chili samplings. All proceeds benefit the many charitable programs of the Rotary Foundation of Coral Gables that supports everything from veterans programs to local and international outreach initiatives.
February is also heart month; so, stay in shape and eat healthy. Of course, it is acceptable to splurge on Valentine’s Day because everyone deserves a sweet treat for the holiday. You can bet Cao Chocolates and Nothing Bundt Cakes will be busy that day!
