The Jr. Orange Bowl’s Inaugural Robotics Competition was an enormous success with teams coming in from all over the state of Florida – and with attendance nearly four times higher than expected. Miami Springs Recreation Center provided a perfect setting for the events during which students competed with their robots for awards.
Among the audience was a group from Archbishop Coleman F. Carroll High School, whose principal Sr. Margaret Ann, O.C.D., and Sr. Catherine Marie were there supporting their team with Robotic teacher Ariel Otero. Teachers, students, and parents alike were very excited about the opportunity that this Jr. Orange Bowl Committee (JOBC) offered students to showcase their talent. Of course, this is just one of numerous events the JOBC presents.
Yet another first-time event, FIU’s inaugural Fall Festival takes place at the FIU’s campus between the Gold and Blue Garages, 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. Look for an exclusive farmers market, games, arts & crafts, vendors, and food trucks for a great family day. All proceeds benefit our local Children’s Miracle Network Hospital, Nicklaus Children’s Hospital. Admission is $5 for adults and $3 for kids under 10.
In other university news, Florida National University, in collaboration with FNU’s Powerhouse, joined forces Oct. 27 with countless community organizations, police, and more for a gigantic event: The Many Faces of Domestic & Teen Dating Violence Rally. Hundreds of high school students were in attendance as featured speakers discussed the topic and later enjoyed a catered lunch.
Halloween brought out the child in us all. Everywhere you turned, a spooky fun event was in the works. Many Doralian members of the Coral Gables Woman’s Club (CGWC), including this writer, enjoyed a Halloween Haunted House Party to benefit the club’s free children’s dental clinic. This mini fundraiser was not only a great way to promote the CGWC but also raised more than $2,500 for the clinic. Members also are involved this month with Operation Christmas Child, filling boxes of gifts to distribute among children in need all over the world this holiday season.
Speaking of dental care, The Tooth Healer Foundation donates to dental clinics all over the world, and locally to a Doral clinic and to the CGWC Clinic. In an effort to increase support for these clinics, they are coordinating a Family Fun Day on Nov. 12 at Pinecrest Gardens, 11000 SW 57th Ave. in Pinecrest between noon and 4 p.m. Admission fee is $20 for adults and $10 for kids ages 3 to 14 years and includes a wide range of fun activities from a petting zoo, relay races, splash pool, nature tour, bounce houses, face painting, and so much more.
