The Jr. Orange Bowl held its first general membership meeting of the season at The Biltmore Hotel with many new volunteers on hand to learn more about the organization from President Samantha Jones, interim executive director Don Slesnick III and Fernanda Rivera, Marketing and Administration Director. Look for several upcoming events in the weeks to come starting on Friday, October 22, for Cross Country Invitational and the Jr. Orange Bowl Basketball Tournament Warm ups on Oct. 22 and 23. Three-time GRAMMY Winner Miami native Cécile McLorin Salvant named “finest jazz singer to emerge in the last decade” (The New York Times) highlights this special evening with guest pianist Sullivan Fortner, who partnered with Salvant on the duo release The Window. The Frost Jazz Vocal Ensemble opens the concert celebrating the music of Antonio Carlos Jobim, one of the great exponents of Brazilian music and the father of the bossa nova with classics like The Girl from Ipanema and Desafinado. South Florida PBS is one of only four Florida public media stations that has been awarded funding from the inaugural Florida Humanities “Broadcasting Hope” grant for a community conversation on water, racism and the African American community. Florida Humanities, the state’s humanities nonprofit organization supports locally-driven public programming. The grant will provide South Florida PBS with financial support to co-host a community event exploring the history of water, racism and the African American community.
South Florida PBS is such an amazing resource in our community. Aside from spectacular documentaries, music performances, etc., their Health channel has informational programs for any type of medical issue. Go to allhealthtv.com and check it out. Kudos to South Florida PBS for all they do and for earning this inaugural grant.
On the service club front, Rotary International District 6990, District Governor Peter Verbeeck recently visited the Rotary Club of Coral Gables to bestow the club’s highest honor, a Lifetime Achievement Award, to Yolanda Woodbridge. This award is not an annual award making it all the more special. As a person who lives and breathes Rotary’s “Four Way Test,” Yoli makes friends wherever she goes including attending more Rotary International Conventions than almost anyone. She has served as everything from Newsletter editor to Club President and has also served as Assistant District Governor. For many years she handled the District’s Annual fundraiser, the Chris Morrison Golf Ball Drop and has a resume of countless other projects she has tackled over the years and she’s not through yet. Congratulations on this most well deserved recognition for truly impressive Rotarian.
By the way, the Rotary Club of Coral Gables meets via zoom every week but they also meet in person at the Hyatt Regency Coral Gables where the club meets every 2nd and 4th Thursday for lunch. David Lawrence was the featured speaker during a recent meeting sharing his experience with his beloved wife’s Alzheimer’s diagnosis. From his life’s work in the newspaper business to The Children Trust , his children and, finally, Roberta’s journey, this compassionate man made a truly touching presentation . David, by the way, is the largest single fundraiser for the Alzheimer’s Association, at $212,000 as of that meeting.
