GFWC Cocoplum Woman’s Club visited GFWC Coral Gables Woman’s Club recently to participate in a fun-filled Karaoke Night that had literally everyone singing, dancing and laughing. Organized by Gables’ member Mireya Kilmon, admission was free but donations were required to sing or have someone else sing. Aside from raising funds for Operation Smile, the affair provided a great way for club members to get to know each other before many traveled together to the Florida Federation of Women’s Club convention in Orlando the end of April.
Among many belting out tunes during the evening were Susie Tilson who brought along her daughter and granddaughter; Carmen Suarez, kicking off a night of song; Barbara Lapsley, who danced more than she sang; Pam and Sandy Schaefer; Maria O’Hollearn; Cocoplum Woman’s Club President, Heike Leibkuchler; Coral Gables Woman’s Club President, Linda Hartwell; Elaine Del Valle; Patty Hendon; and a host of others, all of whom work hard and play with that same fervor in service to others.
Speaking of fun meetings, the Coral Gables Chamber Breakfast on April 21, sponsored by Gulliver Schools, entertained from start to finish. The morning began with Gulliver School’s Symphonic Band with a program that featured Gulliver Academy, Middle School and Prep students, culminating with a panel discussion emceed by Drew Kern with UM Head Football Coach Al Golden and FIU Head Football Coach Mario Cristobal. Both coaches are turning failed programs around and shared their strategies. During Q&A, 94- year-old Marge Hartnett explained she had seven brothers who played football and, knowing the sport, volunteered to help them out if needed. Not to miss out, Coach Cristobal immediately took her up on her offer!
