On the weekend of Apr. 12, District 11 General Federation of Woman’s Club’s members in South Florida gathered at the Rosen Plaza in Orlando to share ideas, thank those who have served on the state board for the past two years and install a new set of officers including 2024-26 president Sara Dessureau, who follows 2022-24 president Linda O’Toole.
It was a busy weekend for all including Anita Jenkins, from the Cocoplum Woman’s Club Club, who as state chaplain led prayers before meals. District 11 past director Elizabeth Fisher had a big weekend coming in as the 2022-24 GFWC FL finance director. New district directors also were recognized. Coral Gables Woman’s Club outgoing president Ruth Martinez will take over as District 11 director for 2024-26. South Florida clubs brought home many awards. Coral Gables Woman’s Club alone picked up two first place awards for Communication/PR and Health & Wellness and other miscellaneous awards as did many others.
Out of all the Leads Candidates from state clubs, Coral Gables Woman’s Club’s own Elizabeth Hicks was selected to represent Florida at the GFWC International Convention in Chicago the end of June. During the Saturday Night dinner, Hicks was among those walking in a processional with this year’s Leads graduates who attended a two-day leadership workshop earlier this year to earn their certificate.
In other news, A Safe Haven for Newborns recently saved another infant from possible abandonment bringing their total to 397 babies. Founder Nick Silverio was a recent guest on Gloria’s Gab LIVE to talk about the organization’s work, the 24/7 hot line, online volunteer option for students, building campaign and upcoming golf tournament to be held at the Trump National Resort on Friday, May 17. In other news, Miami Lighthouse for the Blind and Visually Impaired (MLB), the Miami Lions Club and Rotary Club have been spearheading a Hunger Relief Program in support of Miami’s disproportionately vulnerable population.
Throughout the year, members from these service organizations gathered at the Miami Lighthouse for the Blind packing bags filled with nourishing food and sending the MLB Academy students home with enough food to feed themselves and their immediate families through the weekend. This is certainly a wonderful collaborative effort.
Finally, don’t miss the Coral Gables Woman’s Club’s fifth annual Mother’s Day Tea on Saturday, May 11, 1-4 p.m., at 1001 E. Ponce de Leon Blvd. This is a great way to start the weekend with this crazy “Mad Hatter” event.
If you are into costumes and hats, please come dressed for a magical Alice in Wonderland themed afternoon of fun with music, Prosecco, tea, delicious delights by R Catering and a silent auction to benefit the club’s free children’s dental clinic. Tickets are $125 or $85 for those under 21 years. For info, visit gfwccoralgableswomansclub.org.
Until next time, share your time and talents, count your blessings, and make a difference.
