A crowd of almost 200 people gathered on Feb. 24 for the 14th annual Maine Lobster Feast presented by Firestone Capital at Coral Reef Yacht Club, all to benefit The Way Forward Foundation, formerly known as The Woody Foundation. The affair raised more than $50,000 and half of that will be shared locally with The Sabrina Cohen Foundation.

While sporadic rain on the day of the feast moved the outdoor event inside, feasting on Main Lobster with the accompanying sides with open bars made for a great party. It was great to see Woody Beckham, whose accident inspired the Beckham family to create the foundation to help people with paralysis live an independent and active life. Among the many enjoying the affair with this writer were Anthony and Neira Poppe, Ana Fournaris, Steven Tonkinson, Rick and Margarite Tonkinson, Avante Insurance’s Bill Beckham, Lou Swezey, Trish and Dan Bell, Tom Abraham, Norma Jean Abraham, Robin and Susan Shelley, Maria and Mike Kesti, Becky and Tom Matkov, Kadie Black, Jerry Kavulich, Lucy Foerster, and Nicolas Eterovic.

While thousands were enjoying the South Beach Wine & Food Festival (SOBEWFF), farther south the South Miami Rotary’s Art Festival also attracted huge crowds for the two-day art festival Feb. 22-23. Festival goers enjoyed a variety of impressive art on display and for sale, yummy food, drink and some amazing bands that inspired many to dance.

For both festivals it was a perfect day and all for great charities. SOBEWFF benefits the Chaplin School of Hospitality & Tourism Management at Florida International University (FIU) and the South Miami Art Festival benefits the South Miami Rotary Foundation that funds college scholarships for South Miami students and other community service projects.

On the business front, the Greater Kendall Business Association (GKBA) met at Cheddars Scratch Kitchen in Kendall on Feb. 18. Despite a massive rainstorm that evening, members packed the place for a great social and networking event. GKBA president Carlos Ribero was happy with the ever-increasing attendance with many new members.

Speaking of Ribero of Next Media, this busy man wears many hats. With his unique ability to promote and grow the businesses for his clients, Carlos still finds time for to serve our community and he was recently re-elected to a second term as president of Profit Inc., a category exclusive business networking group that is one of the oldest in Miami Dade County. The group meets the first Thursday of every month for lunch at 94th Aero Squadron and another location on the third Thursdays of every month. For more information on the group, visit Profitinc.org.
