While several nonprofits are collecting school supplies for those in need, schools are preparing for a year of in person learning and sports.
Football season is around the corner and on Labor Day weekend, we will have the Orange Blossom Classic football game. Florida A&M will play Jackson State at Hard Rock Stadium, the OBC’s Battle of the Bands with the two college bands as well as other high school bands at Wasco Center at UM, and more. OBC’s executive director Kendra Bulluck was my guest on Gloria’s Gab LIVE, July 18, to share all the great activities planned for this great football weekend. For the scoop on all the weekend events, watch the show at https://www.facebook.com/Communitynewspapers/videos/1791274084559787/ or visit www.orangeblossomclassic.com/.
Coral Gables Woman’s Club raised more than $1,800 at their Aug. 2 Gringo Bingo at Clutch Burger with proceeds being shared to raise funds for the teachers wish lists at Dr. Marvin Dunn Academy and Tucker Elementary.
Sponsors for this and the next event include Lynn Bauer and Hall Wanless, EZ Title Services and 1st Empire Elite Financial and the Law Office of Jerome Kavulich.
The club already is planning for the Sept. 6 Gringo Bingo and has added yet another sponsor, Nero Immigration Law. Proceeds for that event will be shared with National Alopecia Areata Foundation (NAAF), a charity this event has supported since the first year. Look for more fun with Steven Bradley emceeing the games and DJ Germain providing the music to add to the part atmosphere.
In addition, the club is partnering with the Rotary Club of Coral Gables for what hopes to be a monthly game night at Bay 13 with the first one to take place on Aug. 23. The two clubs will use the proceeds for fund various charitable projects each month. Tickets at $30 will include game play with hourly door prizes, one complimentary glass of wine, beer or soda and some munchies courtesy of Bay 13. This is a great way to meet new people and support our community. To sign up, send email to gloria@cnews.net
Speaking of fundraisers, shout out to Jeannett Slesnick whose birthday celebration helped raise funds for the Coral Gables Cinema. Guests were told not to bring a gift but, if they wished, to become a member of the Coral Gables Cinema or donate to the ongoing campaign which almost all the guests did. By the way, taking over the cinema for a party was inspired and something readers may want to consider. At this celebration, guests enjoyed pizza, soft drinks, popcorn and a great movie, Enchanted April.
In other fun activities for charity, Coco Plum Woman’s Club will hold its 13th annual English High Tea on Aug. 31, from 2 to 4 p.m. to raise funds for restoration of their historic clubhouse. Tickets are $50. For reservations, call Pat Rivas at 786 547-0429.
The City of Coral Gables Community Recreation Department has named Candy Kakouris director of the Coral Gables Golf and Country Club. She will oversee all aspects of the facility’s operations including membership recruitment and relations, special event planning, management, and budgeting, and be the point person for all the ongoing improvement projects the city is undertaking to refurbish and upgrade the club.
Rotarians at the Coral Gables Club are being treated to a list of great speakers at their Thursday lunch meetings held at the Hyatt Regency Coral Gables, 12:15-1:30 p.m., each week. On July 28, the group got an economic update from Tony Villamil of The Washington Group. There is no better person to provide that outlook and Villamil happily fielded numerous questions after his presentation.
The following week, the club heard from Coral Gables Museum’s new executive director Elvis Fuentes whose talk topic was “What’s New at Your Museum.” Fuentes has an impressive curatorial and educational career with 20-plus years of work with museums, cultural and academic institutions in the United States, Europe, Latin America, and the Caribbean.
His bio notes one of his highlight exhibition projects being Caribbean: Crossroads of the World for which he was project director, leading a team of nine curators and experts that produced groundbreaking scholarship. The project was presented concurrently in three museums in New York City. Sounds like quite a coup for the Coral Gables Museum. The Rotary Club of Coral Gables meets every Thursday, 12:15-1:30 p.m., at the Hyatt Regency Coral Gables with amazing speakers every week. Visiting Rotarians are welcomed.
Until next time, keep making each day count and share an act of kindness every day.
