Summer storms caused a few cancelations like the Rotary Club of Pinecrest’s installation; so, look for news on that in upcoming issues. With many people taking vacations, galas and major fundraisers have been replaced during summer months with several events from recognition luncheons to graduation parties and mini fundraisers. Reporting on all of the activities has been a challenge for this writer who took a tumble on May 24, and ended up in the hospital. Fortunately, many have helped cover for me including Fara Sax who generously took over my Gloria’s Gab LIVE show for several weeks, Look for those interviews Fara conducted with such notables as Amanda Altman, CEO, of Kristy House; Sue Deferrari, Director of Ministry, MorningStar Renewal Center; and Danny Morales, of the Bleeding Blue Foundation on our website cnews.com.
Prior to my fall, on May 23, the Rotary Club of Coral Gables honored Allen Morris, as its Martin Hughes Citizen of the Year at a luncheon held at the Hyatt Regency Coral Gables.
Sharing the honors that day as Corporate Citizen of the Year was Jason Neal, representing Waste Management. Both Allen Morris and Waste Management are renowned for support for community events and for generosity across the board. In the absence of President Frank Sexton, Sally Baumgartner officiated over the meeting with Felix Pardo.
Kudos to both of this year’s honorees who are most deserving of the awards.
Speaking of Rotary, Gables Rotarians and members of the Coral Gables Woman’s Club (CGWC) were also among a multitude of organizations giving away books, supplies and providing entertainment at the annual event annual Literacy Fair at the Coral Gables Library on May 18.
With the school year ending, Coral Gables Woman’s Club hosted the club’s annual party for 41 fifth graders graduating from Tucker Elementary. This spirited class danced nonstop when not taking a break to enjoy a lunch of chicken fingers mac and cheese, cupcakes, and more. Among the many volunteering that day included Rita and Saesha Tennyson, Ana Lam, Ruth Martinez, Robyn Hardeman, Jelibel Pena, Yaisy Gonzalez, Dr. Iris Torres, and Maya Bell,
In other news, CGWC’s Gringo Bingo held June 25 at Bay 13 Brewery & Kitchen attracted a nice crowd with proceeds benefiting a relatively young non-profit, the Bleeding Blue Foundation, which assists police who have been harmed or killed in the line of duty. More on that next time.
Until next time, share your time and talents, count your blessings, and make a difference.
