For dog and animal lovers everywhere, the place to be on October 14, 11 a.m. – 4 p.m., will be Pinecrest Gardens (11000 Red Rd.). This event is always a hoot featuring tricks and treats, a Doggie Fun Zone Agility Course, food, drinks, live entertainment, a spooky Kids’ Zone with arts and crafts, and a pumpkin patch where you can take a family picture. My favorite part of the event is the famous doggie/owner costume parade and contest in the Banyan Bowl. These contestants go all out and it’s a great show. In addition, you can meet and greet some PAWS4you rescue dogs and learn more about the PAWS4you mission and its rescue services. Proceeds from this event support PAWS4you’s mission to save dogs from the threat of euthanasia. PAWS4you serves the community by rescuing abandoned and neglected animals as they nurture them back to health and place them in loving lifelong homes. Further south, the Woman’s Club of Homestead (WCH), held their annual murder mystery dinner to benefit their many charitable outreach efforts. These women and one man (Homestead Councilman Larry Roth) know how to have a good time and their September 8th fundraiser brought lots of laughs and the craziest costumes ever. With many women looking pregnant, others in slippers and bathrobes and curlers, this made the women from the Coral Gables Woman’s Club (CGWC) supporting their sister club look way overdressed attired in the club’s Centennial shirts. To better explain, the theme was “A Trailer Park Tragedy Murder Mystery”. The setting was the clubhouse decorated to resemble the Flamingo Trailer Park with inflatable flamingos, wading pools, and beach chairs with a southern menu from collard greens to pulled pork, beef and more. The open bar included everything from multi favored Kool-Aid and moonshine to a regular open bar with appetizers that also brought a chuckle or two: bologna and cheese sandwiches on white bread cut in quarters, canned cheese topping with crackers. You get the idea. WCH President Amy Spadaro and her club pulled off a great event with board member Traci Cope Tam (trailer park owner) and her fellow actors doing a great job.
In other news, business leaders looking to become more involved in service should set aside September 27, for a Pinecrest Rotary Open House at Evelyn Greer Park. Expect to meet many new members and learn about Rotary’s local and global humanitarian efforts.
Joshua Marano, a maritime archeologist with the National Park Service, will be the featured guest speaker. The October 11 meeting at the same location will feature retired MDC Medical Examiner and polio survivor Norman Kassoff who will speak on Rotary’s Polio Plus program.
Speaking of Rotary, the Rotary Club of Coral Gables will host a special showing of the award-winning film, “I Will Soar,” written and directed by Jane Swanko, a film biography of Coach T.J. Jackson (Atlantic Senior High School in Delray Beach). It will be shown on November 5, 2023, 5-9 p.m. at the Coral Gables Cinema on Aragon Avenue in Coral Gables. Guests will enjoy this true story of one city, one community high school and one coach who brought them all together and produced a winning football season with record numbers of first-generation students attending university. Proceeds will benefit a program the club has been supporting called the Be Reading Program in Amber’s Room, a room in the Villages School in Liberty City, dedicated to enhancing reading skills. This very successful K to Grade 6 literacy program is professional, comprehensive, free and fun.
RCCG has already raised significant funds to purchase laptops for the kids, as well as the Be Reading Program, and are looking to expand the program through this November 5 event. Tickets are $100.
Organizations wanted to participate on the annual King Mango Strut Parade should start planning now. Mangoheads, supporters and sponsors of the King Mango Strut Parade in Coconut Grove gathered on September 13, poolside at the Mayfair Hotel, for the 40th King Mango Strut poster and theme reveal. King Mango Productions, an all-volunteer and donation funded organization, stages the politically satirical parade through the streets of Coconut Grove every year to the delight of the usual 10,000 plus spectators. Mango Mixers are scheduled each month leading up to the next Strut which will take place Sunday, January 7, 2024, starting at 2 p.m. The 2024 parade directors Howard Spiegel and Nathan Kurland are always looking for more entertaining groups to participate. Finally, the GFWC Coral Gables Woman’s Club’s Centennial Gala will be an event you will not want to miss. Save the date, December 2, 2023. Suggested attire is 1920’s formal and Gala Chair Rita Tennyson and her committee have a fabulous night planned that includes an awesome auction and entertainment. Sponsorship is available at many levels as are individual tickets. The best ticket deal is a $500 sponsor ticket that comes with a tribute brick on the walkway to CGWC’s historic clubhouse and other recognitions.
