Rotary Clubs throughout the county are helping prepare students for the upcoming school year. South Miami Rotary recently teamed up with Chamber South to stuff 200 backpacks for Be Strong International.
For those not familiar with this acclaimed non-profit organization, it delivers comprehensive educational services and resources to families residing in Broward and Miami-Dade counties. Many South Miami-Dade Rotarians and ChamberSouth members volunteering that day included Mike and Susan Sutta, and Frankie Berti.
Speaking of Rotary, Rotary and Shelter Box USA have a call out in response to the trail of destruction left by Hurricane Beryl across the islands in the Caribbean. Shelter Box will be providing emergency shelter and essential aid items to thousands of people displaced in the hurricane alongside our partner Rotary.
Particular focus is on the islands of Carriacou and Petite Martinique in Grenada, where most buildings, homes, many churches and schools have been destroyed. Carriacou Island was flattened in just 30 minutes leaving thousands homeless, living out in the open or in overcrowded buildings. Stagnant water from the storm brings a high risk of disease, with dengue fever common in these areas.
Shelter Box USA will be providing relief tents and training to support people in setting up their temporary homes in addition to providing solar lights, cooking sets, and mosquito nets.
The Rotary Club of Coral Gables became and ongoing supporter years ago when Rotarians Rick Tonkinson’s son, Steven Tonkinson, became a disaster response volunteer who has been an inspiration to all who know of his efforts outside of his busy work running Tonkinson Financial. The Junior Orange Bowl held its summer mixer at JohnMartin’s Irish Pub & Restaurant in the Gables on July 18. Many new faces were in the mix, including some newer members taking on leadership roles. Longtime member Jennifer Forbes’ daughter, Sophia Espaillat, who recently earned her master’s degree in English, will be chairing the Jr. OB’s Creative Writing contest. Among the others enjoying the affair were Jr. OB president Michael Green, past president and current treasurer Lisa Albizu-Vazquez, Alysse Fisher, and past presidents Chuck Little and Grant Souviron.
On the topic of summer mixer, Coral Gables Woman’s Club president and first vice president Iris Segui recently treated the board to a wine tasting by PRP Wines with appetizers and dinner. The affair was held at the newly renovated Kendall home of Will and Iris Segui; so, it gave everyone a chance to see the transformation that took a year or so to complete.
Next up for the club is its Gringo Bingo fundraiser at Bay 13 Brewery & Kitchen on Aug. 13, 7-9 p.m. This one will benefit ACE Academy, Tucker Elementary and Voices for Children. To RSVP, send email to gloria@cnews.net.
In other news, Profit Inc., one on the oldest business networking groups in Miami Dade County, met in July at Season’s 52. This is a dynamic business group whose president, Carlos Ribero, hosts podcasts featuring Profit Inc. members on a regular basis as well as members of the Greater Kendall Business Association. Aside from volunteer work with non-profits, both of these organizations are great ways to expand one’s spear of influence and become invested in the community. Profit meets the first Thursday of every month at 94th Aero Squadron and the third Thursday at Season’s 52 on Miracle Mile. For more information on Profit Inc., visit www.profitinc.org.
Until next time, share your time and talents, count your blessings, and make a difference.
