Students and teachers are back to school and, with all the non-profit drives to give students in need supplies and backpacks, our focus turns to academics and extracurricular activities.
A Safe Haven for Newborns (ASHFN), a 501(c)(3) dedicated to preventing infant abandonment and supporting mothers in need, has developed a groundbreaking Community Service Mobile App tailored specifically for high school and college students.
Students may choose to do one or more of the following: create a Safe Haven awareness video and earn up to six community service hours; create a Safe Haven article and earn up to three community service hours, and/or create a Safe Haven poster and earn up to three community service hours.
This is a great way to fulfill community service requirements. Students will receive a letter of completion and a certificate of appreciation for their portfolios, while raising more awareness to help save the lives of innocent newborns.
Note that this commitment extends into the digital realm, providing students with an opportunity to contribute to this noble cause from wherever they are in Florida or beyond.
A Safe Haven for Newborns was founded by Nick Silverio who works 24/7 for no pay.
ASHFN has been at the forefront of saving lives for over 23 years, partnering with hospitals, fire stations, and EMS to offer vital services at no cost to expectant mothers, all while protecting their privacy.
To date, 407 babies have been saved and 6,000 mother assisted. This year alone, 18 babies have been saved from possible abandonment or death. Save the date for the organization’s fundraising gala on Oct. 19. For ticket and sponsor info visit www.asafehavenfornewborns.com.
In other youth related news, Coral Gables Woman’s Club is directing proceeds from its August Gringo Bingo to Tucker Elementary, ACE Academy and Voices for Children. Held at Bay 13 Brewery & Kitchen on Aug. 13, this is always a party with the always entertaining Steven Bradley as emcee and DJ Germain providing music with many great prizes.
Next month, on Sept. 10, CGWC will share proceeds with the National Areata Alopecia Foundation whose advocate, immigration attorney Deirdre Nero, is such a great spokesperson and fundraiser.
These monthly CGWC Gringo Bingo fundraisers started in 2019 and have help raised over $100,000 directed to local charities thanks to our own Gringo, Steven Bradley, working with this writer and with major support from Miami’s Community Newspapers, Kings Bowl and ongoing support from Lynn Bauer, Dr. Hal Wanless, Tom and Kim Davison, Jerry Kavulich, Coral Gables Dental Arts-Dr. Jose Chaviano, Carlos and Mayra Rossi, and so many others. Leading up to school opening, countless service organizations and companies have stepped up to make sure students are prepared. Larkin Community Hospital Palm Springs Campus and Miami Dade College Hialeah Campus, along with other community partners, came together at MDC’s Hialeah Campus for a back-to-school giveaway. Larkin’s CNO, Dr. Danay Rodriguez-Arritola, was one of many volunteering hours on Saturday, Aug. 3, where 600 backpacks were distributed thanks to broad community support.
Another huge event took place Aug. 5 at loanDepot Park where the Miami Marlins and AT&T joined forces, partnering with Compudopt, to provide 250 laptops and backpacks to students in need when the Miami Marlins took on the Cincinnati Reds. Families even received free tickets and a food voucher to stay and enjoy the game.
Families from the Marlins Youth Academy, Marlins Nike RBI, Marlins Nike Jr. RBI, and its Slugger Schoolhouses were invited to apply for the laptops and with the help of Compudopt then identified those families in most in need who did not have a computer or tablet in their household.
Until next time, share your time and talents, count your blessings, and make a difference.
