The fall has been packed with events serving the community beginning with the Rotary Club of Pinecrest’s SOCKTOBER campaign. The club encouraged members and friends to donate fresh new socks for homeless men and women receiving assistance at the Miami Rescue Mission. During the month, this successful drive collected a mountain of fresh socks that were distributed as the drive wrapped up on October 29. On that day, club members visited the Miami Rescue Mission where they served the homeless a nutritious meal and gave each person a new pair of socks. For club members, it was a blessing to help and be there in person to hand out the gifts. Among the members attending were Gary Klieger, Shirley Pardon, Hugo Montaudon, Noreen Timoney, Elizabeth Tran, Arlene Terrinoni, Robert Bull and Eytan McManus.
In other news, Coral Gables Woman’s Club’s Gringo Bingo on November 19, 2024, will return to Grand Living in Coral Gables (363 Granello Ave.) with proceeds being shared with the Alzheimer’s Association. Kudos to Lynn Bauer and Dr. Hal Wanless, Carlos & Mayra Rossi, Dr. Jose Chaviano, Tom & Kim Davison and Jerry Kavulich for their ongoing sponsorships and to Grand Living’s Executive Director Rene Sanz for hosting the event.
Tickets for the next event include food, one drink, 13 game cards, music by DJ Germain, and lots of fun with emcee Steven Bradley, the Gringo. For reservations or more information, email gloria@cnews.net. The event will move again on December 10, 2024, to the newly renovated Birdie Bistro (the old Burger Bob’s on the Granda Golf course). Proceeds will benefit CGWC many outreach efforts.
On the cultural front, the Rotary Club of Coral Gables will hold a concert fundraiser on Friday, November 22, at Steinway Piano Gallery (4104 Ponce de Leon Blvd., Coral Gables).
The affair will feature internationally acclaimed pianist touring from Italy, Francesco Attesti.
As an interesting note, turns out Attesti has been a Rotarian in Italy since 2001. Tickets at $50 per person include a reception with an open bar and hors d’oeuvres at 6 p.m. followed by the concert at 7:30 p.m. This is an event music lovers will not want to miss. Proceeds will benefit RCCG’s international projects. Helping to coordinate the affair in the with International Committee Chair Carol Brock, is RCCG Past President Yolanda Woodbridge.
For tickets or more information on RCCG’s Francesco Attesti concert, email rotarycoralgables@gmail.com.
By the way, Give Miami Day is coming up November 21; however, you can start giving on November 17. Be sure to support your favorite charities by making donations that day.
Coral Gables Community Foundation Gala on October 18 with a New York theme was another sell out at the Loew bringing in record donations for its numerous programs and initiatives. Look for coverage on this affair in this issue. That same weekend, on October 19, yet another fabulous gala was held for A Safe Haven for Newborns at Intercontinental Miami. This was a special year that was a reunion of the first baby saved, Gloria Hope, and the firefighters who received her 21 years ago. Gloria, who attended with her adoptive parents Michael and Lori Lewis, is currently attending college and took the stage to sing the Star-Spangled Banner. Laura Pastrana was there again doing a beautiful job as an emcee for the evening. During the event, CEO and founder Nick Silverio announced the number of babies they have saved from possible abandonment is up to 412. Look for more coverage on this affair soon and for the organization’s plans for a new office building as the organization outreach expands into other states and beyond our borders.
South Florida PBS has brought an event to South Florida you will not want to miss. From now through April, 2025, you can step into the visionary world of Leonardo Da Vinci with an immersive art experience. The groundbreaking technology for this experience was transported directly from Amsterdam where Jenny Azcuy, SFPBS’s Vice President of Communications and Marketing traveled to coordinate the planning. The stage for this immersive experience is in Boynton Beach where So. Fla. PBS is headquartered and brings alive DaVinci’s genius in art, science, mathematics and engineering. Sponsorships for transportation for students to participate are underway with more than 10 schools already signed up with transportation underwritten even before the event opened. Check out my interview with Jenny Azcuy on November 5 on Gloria’s Gab LIVE on Facebook, YouTube or at www.cnews.net under podcasts.
For more information or tickets for the experience, visit www.PBSDaVinci.org.
Finally, there are several dates to save for December including The Villager Home Tour on Saturday, December 7. The Villagers President, Kelley Schild will be my guest on Gloria’s Gab LIVE 10 a.m., on Tuesday, November 19. Also, a date to put on your calendar is December 15, for the 76th Junior Orange Bowl Holiday Parade. Tickets for the grandstands are already on sale at the Jr. Orange Bowl’s Eventbrite page. Jr. Orange Bowl President Michael Green will also be a guest on Glori’s Gab LIVE show on Tuesday, November 12. Learn more about the parade and other festival events.
