South Florida PBS is one of only four Florida public media stations that has been awarded funding from the inaugural Florida Humanities “Broadcasting Hope” grant for a community conversation on water, racism and the African American community.
Florida Humanities, the state’s humanities nonprofit organization, supports locally driven public programming. The grant will provide South Florida PBS with financial support to co-host a community event exploring the history of water, racism and the African American community.
South Florida PBS is such an amazing resource in our community. Aside from spectacular documentaries, music performances, etc, its health channel has informational programs for any type of medical issue. Go to allhealthtv.com and check it out. Kudos to South Florida PBS for all they do and for earning this inaugural grant.
In other news, the Junior Orange Bowl conducted its first general membership meeting of the season at The Biltmore Hotel with many new volunteers on hand to learn more about the organization from president Samantha Jones, interim executive director Don Slesnick III and Fernanda Rivera, marketing and administration director.
Look for several events in the weeks to come starting on Friday, Oct. 22, for Cross Country Invitational and the Junior Orange Bowl Basketball Tournament warmups on Oct. 22 and 23. There also are ongoing deadlines for other events. To access all the events, visit www.jrorangebowl.org.
On the cultural scene, the Frost School of Music continues to offer some wonderful concerts. Coming up at UM Gusman Concert Hall, Tuesday, Oct. 12, 7:30 p.m., there will be a Special Evening of Jazz with Grammy- winning vocalist Cécile McLorin Salvant and the Frost Jazz Vocal Ensemble Celebrating Antonio Carlos Jobim.
Three-time Grammy winner Miami native Salvant, named “finest jazz singer to emerge in the last decade” (The New York Times), highlights this special evening with guest pianist Sullivan Fortner, who partnered with Salvant on the duo release The Window. The Frost Jazz Vocal Ensemble opens the concert celebrating the music of Antonio Carlos Jobim, one of the great exponents of Brazilian music and the father of the bossa nova with classics like The Girl from Ipanema and Desafinado. Ticket are required. Go to https://youtube/jZtEmhvzOG8 or

On the service club front, Rotary International District 6990, District Gov. Peter Verbeeck recently visited the Rotary Club of Coral Gables to bestow the club’s highest honor, a Lifetime Achievement Award, to Yolanda Woodbridge. This award is not an annual award, making it all the more special. As a person who lives and breathes Rotary’s “Four Way Test,” Yoli makes friends wherever she goes including attending more Rotary International Conventions than almost anyone.
She has served as everything from newsletter editor to club president and as assistant district governor. For many years she handled the district’s annual fundraiser, the Chris Morrison Golf Ball Drop, and has a resume of countless other projects she has tackled over the years, and she is not through yet. Congratulations on this most well-deserved recognition for a truly impressive Rotarian.
By the way, the Rotary Club of Coral Gables meets via Zoom every week but they also meet in person at the Hyatt Regency Coral Gables every second and fourth Thursday for lunch. South Miami Rotarians always are welcomed as are all Rotarians but RSVPs are encouraged.
This club always attracts great speakers and the meeting referred to above was no exception with David Lawrence Jr. as the featured speaker. During his presentation, David, a man whose compassion is evident in all he pursues, spoke about his life’s work from newspapers to The Children’s Trust, his children and, finally, his beloved wife, Roberta’s, diagnosis with Alzheimer’s. It was a truly interesting and very touching presentation from a man who is the largest single fundraiser for the Alzheimer’s Association at $212,000 raised as of that meeting.
Finally, join me for Gloria’s Gab LIVE on Monday mornings at 10 a.m. My recent guest was Claudia Coupet, who serves on the board of Angels for Humanity, an organization that has a primary focus on helping children in Haiti but also does local projects. The group’s main fundraiser is a star-studded fashion show luncheon called Catwalk for Charity coming up Sunday, Oct. 24, noon to 4 p.m., at the Ritz Carlton Key Biscayne.
