The ‘giving season’ brings out the best in community

As we end the year, we give thanks for our blessings. For many, this is the time of year when a helping hand for toys or groceries or a visit from anyone, can be a godsend.

Our South Florida nonprofit community is incredibly good at finding and fulfilling those needs. When it comes to raising funds for programs and projects that help those in need to helping fund medical research, our community comes through to answer the call.

Most recently, Coral Gables Woman’s Club prepared 30 food baskets with gift certificates for a turkey to the families whose children are served by the club’s free children’s dental clinic.

They also collected and packaged toiletries for yet another group serving the less fortunate.

The club’s dental clinic director, Dr. Iris Torres-Rivera, also is collecting $20 gift cards for Santa to hand out as children pose for photos with him at the club’s annual dental clinic holiday party.

To help raise additional funds for these holiday programs, come to the club’s Game Night fundraisers at Bay 13. This is a joint charity event held the fourth Tuesday of every month with the Rotary Club of Coral Gables. Price is $30 and includes one wine or beer and snacks with great prizes and lots of fun.

Thanksgiving Day is always a great day for several Coral Gables Rotarians who gather every year at Chapman Partnership to serve Thanksgiving meals.

As for December events leading up to Hanukkah, Christmas and Kwanza, look for Coral Gables Woman’s Club’s Gringo Bingo at Clutch Burger on Dec. 6, 7-9 p.m., with the always popular bingo caller Steven Bradley and music by Dr. Nure Khoury to make it a party.

While the proceeds from the November event were shared with the Alzheimer’s Association, the December Gringo Bingo’s proceeds will be shared with the American Diabetes Association’s Jingle Bell Run to be held on Dec. 17 at Tropical Park. The morning event always brings out the most creative festive attire and lots of laughs with Santa on hand for photo ops as well.

In future events, save Dec. 10 for two great events: Paws4You Gala and the Villagers Historic House Tour.

Until next time, keep making each day count and keep sharing acts of kindness.
