The Junior Orange Bowl Committee geared up for a busy season with a meeting at Restaurant St. Michel recently and then a big presentation at the monthly meeting of the Coral Gables Chamber of Commerce. As one of the sponsors for the Chamber breakfast at The Biltmore Hotel, the JOBC was given time to speak and gave JOBC President Marti Bueso an opportunity to premiere JOBC’s new promotional video that highlights the many festival events and their huge economic impact on the South Florida community.
At that same Chamber meeting, past JOBC President, Mayor Don Slesnick, gave his State of the City Address. Among the packed ballroom at The Biltmore Hotel attending the breakfast were Chamber Chair UM’s Sara Artecona, Chamber President Mark Trowbridge, civic leaders including several JOBC past presidents and members as well as the Orange Bowl Committee’s Executive Director Eric Poms.
GFWC Coral Gables Woman’s Club held a Bunko Night fundraiser on September 16, raising almost $400 for Heifer International. While Barbara Lapsley organized the event, President Pam Schaefer made enough spaghetti sauce to feed an army while other club members brought salad and desserts. Mayra Dominguez helped in the kitchen cooking pasta for the hungry crowd before the games began. The ladies also took time out to wish a happy 80th birthday to longtime member Molly Adams and a good time was had by all.
Preschool parents now have their very own PTA called the South Florida Preschool PTA. They meet monthly and provide wonderful speakers addressing the needs and concerns of parents of newborns, preschoolers and beyond. Their organization with no geographical boundaries is a child advocacy and mothers’ support group for parents of children newborn to 6.
Interested parents may join the South Florida Preschool PTA, for their October General Meeting, on Thursday, October 1, at Kendall United Methodist Church, 7600 SW 104 St., Pinecrest from 9 a.m. to 11:45 a.m. The program will include a Women’s Health Panel to discuss: Breast Health, Heart Health, Gynecological Health and Mental Health. For more information, go online to www.sfppta.org . In other charitable activity, Joseph’s Salon, in Palmetto Bay, hosted their third annual Haircuts for Hope, to benefit Kids Hope United. For one day only, professional stylists provided haircuts on their day off for a reduced price with proceeds benefiting the programs and services of Kids Hope United. Joseph Alves and his team gave 22 haircuts and raised $1,265.
The fun included Sparkles the Clown with her daughter who painted children’s faces. Donations from Lots of Lox; Lilia’s Cakes, Cupcakes and More; Misha’s Cupcakes and LA Sweets completed an entertaining day.
