On March 4, several Pinecrest residents opened their yards for The Villagers Annual Garden Tour that always attracts a huge crowd of plant lovers, supporters and designers. Among a few of the many homes toured included those of Jerry Mashburn, Brent and Daniella Reynolds, Jason Feldman and Darwin Rosario, and Cary and Alex Falero. The tour was a great way to see inside those backyards for great gardening and landscaping ideas as well as a way to run into old friends that made it especially fun for this writer. At the beginning and end of the tour, guests gathered at Pinecrest Gardens that graciously opened access for the event and where The Villagers set up a store inside and out with everything from plants to jewelry, collectibles and more.
This is just one of many fundraisers The Villagers produce that provide funding for dozens of local nonprofits. Of course, this group is always looking for volunteers and, if you are interested, email their Membership Chair, Sweet Pea Ellman, at sweetpeacg@hotmail.com.

Speaking of service clubs, the (GFWC) General Federation of Women’s Club’s newest club in our South Florida District 11, the Woman’s Club of Historic Overtown Village, hosted their first district meeting at their new home, the Historic Black Precinct Courthouse and Museum, on March 11. District 11 Director, Virginia Yermoli, and Overtown Club’s President Lavette Moore welcomed everyone during a social time when a raffle helped raised almost $200 for the GFWC President Project, Camp Boggy Creek. After enjoying some tasty goodies, like some members famous sweet potato pie and more, the members of several clubs attending, convened to the upstairs courtroom where they were treated to a talk by Museum Director Terrance Cribbs-L’orrant. After a great historical perspective, Terrance presented an award to Carolyn Taylor-Pate, the first black police and fire dispatcher for the City of Miami Police in February, 1966. Special presentations were also made to other inspiring black women in the community including Stephanie van Vark, founder of StephanieCrates; Karen Cartwright, community advocate; Anita Najiy, who was first female assistant chief of the City of Miami Police Department.
Until next time, share your talents and make a difference, and be kind!
