If you are a superhero, as are the supporters of Voices for Children, you will want to reserve your seat for the Voices for Children annual luncheon presented by Stearns Weaver Miller where guests are encouraged to come dressed as a superhero. As luncheons go, this one is far and above one of the most entertaining from start to finish. Save the date, Friday, October 25, 11 a.m.- 2 p.m., at the Loews Hotel Coral Gables to celebrate 40 years of impact this amazing non-profit has dedicated to improving the lives of children in foster care. The Guardian ad Litem Program is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to services and programs this organization provides for our foster children from great experiences like mission trips and its comfort closet to helping bridge gap to self-sufficiency. President & CEO Kadie Black works tirelessly with a committed board and volunteers raising funds to help ensure that abused, abandoned, and neglected children in Miami-Dade County each have a court-appointed Guardian ad Litem and that financial assistance and other resources are available for their health, educational, and social needs.
Speaking of helping our children, our focus is directed to our schools as they open for the 2024-25. At many of our public schools, budgeted amounts for classroom teachers supplies fall short of needs but thankfully local support often fills the gap. When ACE Academy, an alternative school for grades 9-12, was located in Coral Gables and, even after it was moved north to become the Marvin Dunn Academy for Community Education, local philanthropists including Lynn Bauer, Dr. Hal Wanless, John and Ada Holian, Jerry Kavulich, and so many others came to its aid. What started as a donation of a TV set developed into a commitment of support that spans two decades. In fact, at the start of every school year, Lynn and Hal invite ACE Principal Dr. Deborah Carter and her teachers for a breakfast during which teachers turn in their wish lists that are quickly fulfilled by the start of school thanks to the many guests at the breakfast and beyond. The most recent breakfast held at Denny’s on S. Dixie Hwy. on August 12, was a chance for Ace’s many friends to deliver school supplies and checks as well as hear from Dr. Carter and Lynn, who thanked all for their ongoing support. Lynn also thanked the teachers whose efforts have changed the lives of countless students whom they have nurtured and helped become successful in their life’s journey.
Also in an effort to help children, we have The Home Team whose founder and president Alex Pou recently spoke to the Rotary Club of Coral Gables. Alex recently was interviewed on Gloria’s Gab LIVE about this non-profit organization’s many outreach efforts. The Home Team is offering several after-school enrichment and youth development programs at Ponce de Leon Middle School and Gibson-Bethel Community Center for the 2024-2025 school year. These after-school programs that include free meals have been provided since 2016 and focus on tutoring, anti-bullying, cultural arts, mentoring, dance, help with homework, STEM, literacy, post-secondary planning and so much more. Working with Alex, a former University of Miami football player whom many may remember, are other fellow Hurricanes including one of his directors Andrew Bain, Esq., who played for the Canes and later the NY Giants.
