May 8th was a beautiful day for golf at La Gorce Country Club on Miami Beach where Voices for Children raised funds to support their Guardian Ad Litem program. Board member Brad Meltzer orchestrated the event that raised $330,000 thanks to generous sponsors and donors who enjoyed a day on the beautiful course with all the amenities from great food to an open bar. Adding the fun that day was the announcement that someone had won the “Hole-In-One”. That lucky golfer, Blake Murphy from Coastal Construction, won a new Cadillac. For this writer, it was the first time to ever experience a tournament in which that lucky shot was made. The event also gave Voices for Children Foundation’s President & CEO, Kadie Black, and the Foundation’s Board Chair Kira Grossman, an opportunity to thank the many sponsors, talk about the programs and accept a $330,000 check from the event proceeds.
Yet another smaller fundraiser was coordinated by Coral Gables Rotarian Past President and new inductee into the RI District 6990 Hall of Fame, Yolanda Woodbridge. The affair, Kudos for Kids, was created to benefit the club’s International Committee outreach programs.
Guests enjoyed a buffet and open bar, live music from the Frost School of Music. The location, donated for the event, was picture perfect with a spacious patio backyard garden often used for weddings in the Coconut Grove neighborhood. International Committee Chair Henryka Manes was delighted by the incredible in-kind donations and sponsor dollars, the largest of which came from Fred Baddour, RCCG Club President Ana Fournaris and Carol and Jasper Brock. With a promised matching grant, this little soiree promises to net, after all is said and done, more than $18,000 plus for the club’s outreach efforts in Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Haiti and Colombia.
In other fundraising news, the GFWC Miami Springs Woman’s Club (FL) organized Trike-A-Thon fundraiser for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. The Miami Springs Montessori School students were matched and sponsored by MSWC members, prospective members, and friends. The students spent the week leading up to the ride learning how to ride a tricycle safely and working together raising money for the kids at St. Jude. The day of the Trike-A-Thon was a rainy one, but that could not stop the children who enjoyed all the attention from club members. All together 63 club members and 59 students raised $4,095.00 for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
This past week on May 19, A Safe Haven for Newborns’ (ASHFN) held its 6th Annual Tee Off for a Cause Golf Tournament at Trump National Doral Resorts Red Tiger golf course. More on that tournament and the Coral Gables Woman’s Club Mother’s Day Tea next time.
Finally, Doral’s own Steven Bradley, and this writer orchestrated yet another Gringo Bingo fundraiser at Steven’s Clutch Burger Restaurant raising more than $1,200.00 for Coral Gables Woman’s Club charities including its free children’s dental clinic. The next Gringo Bingo will be held Tuesday, June 6th , 7 – 9 p.m. For a $30 donation, guests receive 12 games cards with great prizes and one cover all card whose winner receives a card for a burger a month at Clutch Burger at 146 Giralda Avenue in Coral Gables.
Until next time, share your talents, count your blessings, not your challenges and make a difference.
