Service organizations in the South Florida area have been great about supporting each other and collaborating on charitable outreach and fundraisers. From a recent Tea at The Miami Woman’s Club to the Coral Gables Community Foundation’s Tour of the Kitchens, February was a blur of great events. Most recently the Coral Gables Woman’s Club held its monthly Book Club meeting on Feb. 12 at Sunset Tavern in South Miami; the club’s monthly Gringo Bingo fundraiser at Bay 13 on Feb. 13, and then a movie day at Coral Gables Arts Cinema on Feb. 18. While the crowd was smaller than usual for Gringo Bingo, it still raised more than $1,000 for charity.
In yet another successful event, we direct our attention to the Coral Gables Arts Cinema on a very rainy afternoon. Despite the bad weather, the movie fundraiser chaired by Rita Tennyson was packed. Guests enjoyed a lovely cocktail hour with Prosecco bar, box of cheese, cracker, macaroons and more, and then popcorn for the featured French movie, A Taste of Things. The club’s fundraising chair Tennyson, whose R Catering always over delivers, brought her usual “A” game that even included a pink chocolate fountain for the skewered fresh strawberries.
Kudos to Marlin Ebbert, chair of the Coral Gables Arts Cinema, for recommending the event and helping the club coordinate this charity fundraiser. Among some of those assisting that day were Seasha and Corey Tennyson, Carmen Suarez, and Nancy Desmangles.
The Villagers support for historic preservation efforts is critical to so many including the Coral Gables Woman’s Club. That organization is deeply indebted to The Villagers for helping maintain the club’s historic clubhouse over many years and most recently helping with upgrades as the club’s 40-year inspection is finally coming to a close. The Villagers, whose annual Garden Tour was scheduled for Mar. 2, also were present at the Coral Gables Foundations Tour of the Kitchens selling their event tickets. What a blessing having these local non-profits working together for our community.
The Villagers president Alana Perez was a recent guest on my show to discuss the tour and the many historic preservation projects they support with their fundraising efforts. In other news, Coral Gables Bar Association celebrated its annual “Judicial Reception” on the rooftop of First Bank in the Gables. Dozens of county judges, many of whom are running in this year’s election, attended this sellout event as guests of the Coral Gables Bar.
It was a perfect evening of music, great food and drink, and a magnificent view of the city’s skyline.
Among those seen enjoying the evening were CGBA president Vanessa Vasquez, CGBA past presidents Jerry Kavulich and Bruce Bounds, directors Brian Barakat, Elina Magaly Santana, Madelin D’Arce, County Judge Patty Merino-Pedraza, CGCF CEO Mary Snow, Cristi Garcia, Sandra Demirci, Michael Haggard, Bill Sussman, Samuel Gelb, and PJ Mitchell.
Until next time, share your time and talents, count your blessings, and make a difference.
