The General Federation of Women’s Clubs in District 11 welcomed 2024 with multiple events from programs, orientation and installation meetings to strategic planning and fundraisers with more to come.

Coral Gables Woman’s Club gathered women for all over southern Miami for a innovation recycling program, a clothing swap party coordinated by the club’s Environment chair Frances Yec. After fossil fuel industry, the clothing industry is next in line for most harmful to the environment, so recycling cloths keeps them out of landfills.

More than 35 women came to the event at the historic clubhouse on Jan. 17, with bags of gently used or new clothes, shoes and accessories. The mountain of clothes and accessories that were not swapped were sorted and donated to the Thrift Shop at Lotus House the following Monday by a group of members led by the club’s Civic & Engagement chair Kristina Jackson.

Earlier that week, that same Gables Club held its monthly Gringo Bingo at Bay 13 Brewery & Kitchen in Coral Gables raising funds for various charitable programs including the club’s free children’s dental clinic. With Steven Bradley emceeing and music by celebrity DJ Germain, the crowd had a fabulous time and Kings Bowl offered some amazing prizes.

Among those in the crowd were some of the sponsors including Lynn Bauer, Dr. Hal Wanless, and Jerry Kavulich. Look for the next event scheduled for Feb. 13 with 6 p.m. registration and bingo 7-9 p.m. A $30 donation gets you one beer, house wine or soda and 12 game cards plus a coverall game for a big prize. RSVP to gloria@cnews.net.

In other club news, on Jan. 11 the Woman’s Club of Coconut Grove installed the club’s 2024-26 officers. Outgoing president Billie Jean Baldwin passed the gavel to new president Illine Davila after being installed by past district director Lynda Randolph. Other newly installed officers included first vice president, Greg Breidenbach; second vice president, Cynthia Shelley; corresponding secretary, Sonya DeLong; recording secretary, Lara Gallardo; treasurer, Raysa Lebron, and directors at large, Billie Baldwin and Marlene Erve.

On Jan. 27, the Miami Woman’s Club held an afternoon tea fundraiser to raise funds for their charitable programs. Shirley Pardon chaired the event that garnered support for the outreach efforts by many. That same day, Rotarian Robert Bull gathered club members to plant trees at North Point Community Center with other organizations. Look for more on those events in coming issues.

Until next time, share your time and talents, count your blessings, and make a difference.
