South Florida has 12 clubs that are members of the General Federation of Women’s Club Florida District 11, all of which have members who don’t necessarily live near their club’s meeting places.
In fact, Coral Gables Woman’s Club has members from Miramar, Brickell, Doral, Pinecrest, Palmetto, Coral Gables, Kendall and the list goes on. I often write about the Gables Club because I am a member and there is so much to report on with their monthly and annual events that support the club’s free children’s dental clinic that serves children of the working poor throughout the county and numerous other charities.
On Feb. 4, the Coral Gables Woman’s Club began its Centennial year with its eighth annual Children’s Festival attracting children from around the county to the historic clubhouse that once housed the Coral Gables Library. Chaired by Saesha Tennyson with lots of help from Kate Swain and her committee, the Saturday affair welcomed a record number of children with their families who delighted in the day of fun interactive activities.
While the Coral Gables Museum provided a colored printing workshop activation, Mindful Monkeys Yoga Studio demonstrated and led the kids in a peaceful breathing exercise.
Children were happy to listen to a beautiful story, Amelia’s Adventures, told by local author Carolina Isaias and they were even introduced to Miggy, the doggy mascot from Miggy’s Gift Melanoma, and learned about that non-profit organization.
Of course, one of the favorites every year is the Coral Gables Police canine unit. This year they brought out Stitch, the Slovakian-born German Shepherd K9, who showed the kids how a dog can fly while being calm and obedient. In addition, Kiddos Magazine even gave away an incredible prize of four tickets to a fun-filled family park in Orlando.
With Valentine’s Day close at hand, children enjoyed a chance to create Valentine’s Day Cards for veterans and even decorated bird houses carved from recycled cartons and jugs that were collected by members of the club.
Among the many contributors to making the event possible were Publix for donating an abundance of oranges, bananas, and bottled water; Costco that provided healthy organic snacks, and R Catering whose staff helped with the covered charcuterie trays and other food display items. Five lucky guests, who participated in a free raffle, were able to take home coffee that was generously donated by Ruta Maya Coffee Company. Motivational Edge also donated enough books and toys for everyone to get a gift as they left.
For the CGWC, this event is a great way to give back but also to make people aware of the club’s free children dental clinic that provides hundreds of thousands of dollars of free dental care annually to children of the working poor. Dental Clinic director Dr. Iris Torres noted that annual gifts from the Dr. John T. Macdonald Foundation, Delta Dental, Coral Gables Community Foundation, the Rotary Club of Coral Gables and others is supplemented by the club’s fundraisers such as the recent Fashion Show & Brunch that was a stellar affair.
Leading up the Fashion Show, Rita Tennyson, the Fashion Show chair; Myra of Bloom Boutique, and Leticia Matheus of Lele Reis, were guests on my Gloria’s Gab LIVE on Feb. 8..
Both Myra and Leticia provided most all the fashions for the day from clothes to Leticia’s amazing jewelry.

Finally, save the date, Nov. 11, for the Archdiocese of Miami 65th Anniversary Gala that will feature the legendary band, Earth, Wind & Fire. As a first ever destination gala, guests will travel to Casa de Campo, Dominican Republic, for the weekend of fun, Nov. 9-12. Plans are underway for some incredible events, including mission work in the schools in La Romana. All the funds raised through the upcoming gala will support Catholic education and help brighten the future of generations to come.
