Coral Gables Woman’s Club (CGWC) Children’s Festival on Feb. 3, entertained children and adults alike with a day filled with hands-on activities, Mindful Monkeys Yoga, presentations, stations providing information and fun projects like the Bonnet House and Coral Gables Museum.
One of the highlights was an amazing performance by 10-year-old Mia Rose who belted out songs like a seasoned performer and received a standing ovation. Of course, food provided by R Catering and drinks with Maya Coffee kept everyone going for the day.
One especially interesting organization participating was The Green Haven Project, a non-profit that focuses on creating community gardens in areas usually referred to as food deserts. Locally grown food produced is then given away to the community free of charge.
Jorge Palacios, founder and president of the organization, instructed children on planting and provided little pots, seeds and soil for all to take home and nurture.
Among the many other projects, included having the children create Valentine cards for our military members; finger printing by Crime Watch Truly; police and fire department programs, and more, for a great day for kids and parents. Kudos to Saesha Tennyson, event chair, and her committee including Kate Swain and so many others who put together a spectacular day.
In other news, Brightmont School in South Miami recently conducted its ribbon-cutting ceremony and offered school tours. Congratulations to campus director Monica Torres. This is an exciting addition to our educational landscape as the school teaches one on one. Monica was a recent guest for the Chamber South’s podcast at Miami’s Community Newspapers. Speaking of podcasts, fellow Rotarian Donald Van Orsdel joined me for Gloria’s Gab Live show recently to celebrate Van Orsdel Funeral & Cremation Service’s 100th anniversary. This family-owned funeral home boasts four generations as Don’s daughter, Crystal Marchant, now is hands on and it looks like her son may make it five generations. For personalized caring people at your most vulnerable time, this family-run business, as opposed to the corporate run facilities, makes all the difference.
Following up on the Jan. 27 Tea held at The Miami Woman’s Club. A true English Tea chaired by club president Shirley Pardon, who hales for Great Britain, garnered support for the club’s outreach efforts by many other GFWC clubs and friends who accounted for the sellout crowd. Among the many attending was incoming District 11 director Ruth Martinez who will take over from Virginia Yermoli.
