Coral Gables Residents

As members of the Coral Gables Professional Firefighters, we are deeply committed to ensuring the safety and well-being of our community. Recent events, such as the large fire at a Miami three-story apartment building highlighted in recent news articles, underscore the critical importance of maintaining proper firefighter staffing levels as outlined by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) in NFPA 1710.

NFPA 1710 provides guidelines that recommend adequate staffing levels for firefighting operations based on the size and needs of a community. These standards are crucial for our ability to respond effectively to emergencies, minimize property damage, and save lives.

Why is proper firefighter staffing so critical?

  1. **Timely Response**: Adequate staffing ensures that we can respond promptly to emergencies, crucial in situations where every second counts.

  1. **Operational Effectiveness**: With sufficient personnel, we can perform critical tasks simultaneously, such as search and rescue, ventilation, fire suppression, and medical aid, which are essential for managing emergencies efficiently.

  1. **Safety of Firefighters**: Proper staffing reduces physical and mental fatigue among our firefighters, enabling them to operate more safely in hazardous conditions and make sound decisions under pressure.

  1. **Community Protection**: Your safety is our priority. By adhering to NFPA 1710 standards, we enhance our ability to protect lives, property, and the environment within our community.

The recent fire incident in Miami serves as a reminder of the unpredictable nature of emergencies and the need for preparedness. Various news agencies reported that 120 firefighters worked to extinguish the fire at the three-story apartment building. In comparison, Coral Gables has 32 firefighters on duty, daily, citywide, with buildings much taller than a three-story apartment, like The Plaza.  If that incident would have taken place within city limits, an additional 90 firefighters from surrounding fire departments would have been needed. Firefighters from departments like Miami, Miami Dade, and even Hialeah. Those additional units would respond based on availability.

Coral Gables is the only city in Miami Dade County that does not meet the NFPA 1710 National; Standard of having 43 firefighters for initial response to high-rise fires, buildings seven stories or more. (Key Biscayne is a single-station department.)

As members of the Coral Gables Professional Firefighters, we advocate for staffing levels that meet or exceed these guidelines. However, achieving this requires adequate support from our community leaders.

Therefore, we kindly request your support to make sure our city mayor and commissioners prioritize sufficient funding and resources to ensure your fire department has the proper staffing levels as recommended by NFPA 1710. This support is crucial in safeguarding our community against fire hazards and other emergencies.

Together, let’s work towards a safer community where emergency responses are swift, effective, and reliable. Let’s continue to prioritize safety and preparedness for all.
