A Safe Haven for Newborns golf event nets over $30,000

A Safe Haven for Newborns’ annual Golf Tournament at Trump National Resort, which raised over $30,000.00, was one for the books.

Thunderstorms and rain delayed play for a few hours but everyone got in nine holes or more. Food trucks, open bar and a barbecue awards dinner completed the day with a raffle and auction for some great sports memorabilia.

Kudos to event chair Chelsea Oakley, who took over from Gina Perez, who monitored from home. Chelsea did a great job of handling all the challenges of that rainy day. ASHFN founder and CEO Nick Silverio was delighted to have so many volunteers and longtime supporters like Mike Murphy and his team from Coastal Construction participating once again.

Coming up next for ASHFN is the annual gala set of Oct. 28. Save the date! This is always a must attend event. For more info, visit https://asafehavenfornewborns.com/.

Coral Gables Woman’s Club’s Education chair Saesha Tennyson and her committee were busy on May 20, at the Coral Gables Literacy Festival with club president Ruth Martinez and new members Athena Atkins, Meredeth McKissick, Jelibel Peña, and Margarette Beauchamp distributing information on the dental clinic and more.

A few weeks later, on June 2, Saesha and her committee were at it again producing the annual Francis Tucker Elementary graduation dance party that the club hosts every year. A crowd of 53 students plus five teachers and staff attended this party that the club has been sponsoring for Frances S. Tucker Elementary, a school they adopted decades ago. The children and staff looked forward to this day and, for many kids, the experience was a first, dining in a formal setting and enjoying a luncheon generously donated by R Catering that included pastas, salad, rolls, and “Graduation” cupcakes for all.

Congratulations go out to all of our 2023 graduates! Colleges have been holding ceremonies for the past month with lots of proud parents traveling far and wide. For this writer, the trip was to Orlando to see granddaughter Alison Bean graduate from UCF. In spite of a little stress from losing the tickets to the ceremony (which we managed to get in), it was a memorable ceremony. Getting locked in the stadium while doing a photo shoot made for more laughs and added to a list of activities during a weekend that coincided with Cinco de Mayo festivities in a town filled with happy family members of students enjoying it all.

Finally, love and prayers go out to the family of Tania Stern, president of the Coral Gables Jr. Woman’s Club (1985-86) and Cabaret general chair who raised countless dollars over decades for the CGWC’s free children’s dental clinic that provides care for children of the working poor. She was one of the kindest, generous, loving, hardworking, creative, funny, and brilliant people I have ever known.

She passed away after battling ALS and was courageous to the end. Tania was my best friend, a second mother to my girls, a loving devoted wife to Rudy Stern, mother to four amazing children and grandmother to seven. Her passing leaves a hole in the hearts of the countless people who loved her. May she rest in peace.

Until next time, share your talents, count your blessings and not your challenges, and make a difference.
