ACE Academy teachers’ wish lists fulfilled

Like many of our public schools, budgeted amounts for classroom teachers’ supplies fall short of needs, but local support often fills the gap.

When ACE Academy, an alternative school for grades 9-12, was located in Coral Gables and even after it was moved north to become the Marvin Dunn Academy for Community Education, local philanthropists including Lynn Bauer, Dr. Hal Wanless, John and Ada Holian, Jerry Kavulich, Hank Langston and so many others came to its aid.

What started as a donation of a TV set developed into a commitment of support that has spanned two decades. In fact, at the start of every school year, Lynn and Hal invite ACE principal Dr. Deborah Carter and her teachers for a breakfast during which teachers turn in their wish lists that are quickly fulfilled by the start of school thanks to the many guests at the breakfast and beyond.

The most recent breakfast held, Aug. 12, at Denny’s on US 1, was a chance for ACE’s many friends to deliver school supplies and checks as well as hear from Dr. Carter and Lynn, who thanked all for their ongoing support. Lynn also thanked the teachers whose efforts have changed the lives of countless students whom they have nurtured and helped become successful in their life’s journey.

The next night, in another effort to support our youth, Coral Gables Woman’s Club’s (CGWC) directed proceeds from its monthly Gringo Bingo to ACE as well as Tucker Elementary and Voices for Children. As always, emceeing the night was Steven Bradley who was presented with a belated birthday cake, and there was music by celebrity DJ Germain of IHeart Radio who added to thr party atmosphere.

Among the many enjoying the fun at Bay 13 Brewery & Kitchen were Helen Roguera, Elena Leonardi. Alma Suarez, Nancy Desmangles, Kevin and Debbie Courtney, Hiba Nassar, Meredith McKissick, Julia Irvin, and Barbara Lapsley.

In other news, The Home Team’s founder and president Alex Pou recently spoke to the Rotary Club of Coral Gables and was interviewed on Gloria’s Gab LIVE about this non-profit organization’s many outreach efforts.

The Home Team is offering several after-school enrichment and youth development programs at Ponce de Leon Middle School and Gibson-Bethel Community Center for the 2024-25 school year. These after-school programs, that include free meals, have been provided since 2016 and focus on tutoring, anti-bullying, cultural arts, mentoring, dance, help with homework, STEM, literacy, post-secondary planning and much more.

The Coral Gables Woman’s Club recently celebrated the unveiling of a new bench at the club’s Little Library. This project, which was funded through the county’s Office of Neighborhood Safety Community Action and Human Services Department’s “Safe in the 305” grant, was spearheaded by club member Kristina Jackson with Ana Lam and Ann Ryan, who put the pieces together to get the funding and organize a dedication that included inspiring remarks from longtime dedicated club member, Dorothy Thomson, the first woman mayor of Coral Gables.

The new bench offers a cozy spot to enjoy a book and reflects the club’s commitment to enhancing community spaces. In fact, within 30 minutes following the dedication of the bench, a family came by with a little girl who selected a book from the Little Library and “cozied” up with her mom and dad on the new bench to read.
You can’t make that up; it was perfect.

Congratulations go out to Coral Gables Woman’s Club member Henryka Manes. Henryka was recently honored by Macalaster College with an award for her work in Haiti. This prestigious award recognizes individuals who advance internationalism and choose to be guided by their vision and hopes rather than by fears. Henryka works for Ecoworks and her work covers Haiti. It’s not an easy assignment, but she is amazing.

Until next time, share your time and talents, count your blessings, and make a difference.
