In autumn 2015, the historic Coral Gables Merrick House ̶ the boyhood home of city founder George Merrick — closed its doors in preparation for a massive restoration and rehabilitation project that began the following year.
The contents of the home were moved carefully into storage to make room for a dramatic transformation, which included upgrading virtually every aspect of the property, including an extensive outdoor landscaping redesign reminiscent of Althea Merrick’s early gardens.
At an approximate cost of $1.7 million, the house was restored and refurbished top to bottom with a new roof] upgraded mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems], repaired and restored wood floors; restored windows, and other work on the house’s two floors.
An Italian artisan was called in to repair the Venetian plaster in the stair hall. Interior wood columns that had been removed were replicated and reinstalled and the stone fireplace was repainted and restored. On the exterior, a new ADA-compliant ramp was installed to ensure access for all. The second floor of the house was restored completely.
The detached garage structure also was restored during this project. Structural upgrades were made and ADA-compliant restrooms were added to the first floor for public use. The second floor apartment was outfitted as an office with a conference room and new staff restroom.
Around the property, new lighting was introduced and security cameras were installed to ensure the safety of this historic property and those who visit it.
The newly restored Coral Gables Merrick House, located at 907 Coral Way, will reopen its doors to the public with a Holiday Open House on Sunday, Dec. 9, 1-4 p.m. Visitors will enjoy refreshments, entertainment, and a special visit from Santa. The event is open free to the public.
