In 2004, Holocaust Impact Theater (HIT) embarked on a mission to educate and inspire teens through the power of the arts. Now in its 19th year of production, HIT continues to provide local high school students a platform to write, produce, perform and direct original scripts dealing with timely, relevant issues of social injustice and intolerance, all with the underlying goal of promoting Holocaust education and remembrance.
This year’s show, being held March 7, 8 and 9 at Alper JCC Miami’s Robert Russell Theater, is entitled PLEDGE. The play focuses on the rise of antisemitism on college campuses.
“The arts have a profound way of conveying history and teaching important lessons. Through HIT, we aim to ensure that the Holocaust is not forgotten,” said Ruth Gordon, M.Ed., founder of HIT. “Each year’s student-led production is not only an impressive feat from an arts perspective, but also highlights important themes and thought-provoking topics relevant to our current political climate.”
Funded through Alper JCC Miami, the year-long program starts each summer when student producers choose the theme of the year’s production. In August, the writing team is selected and begins creating the script. By early December, the script takes shape and open auditions kick-off, leading to rehearsals that intensify in frequency as the March show date approaches.
This year’s production boasts a team of more than 20 high school teens, each receiving 150 hours of community service for their contributions.
