A group of residents celebrated on Oct. 27 the unveiling of the statue of Althea Fink Merrick, mother of Coral Gables founder George Merrick.

The life-size bronze statue of Althea, the latest undertaking of the Coral Gables Garden Club, is seated on a bench next to a basket of flowers in the Merrick House garden. The statue is a gift from the Coral Gables Garden Club to the community in honor of Coral Gables’ most famous matriarch.

Attending the ceremony were Coral Gables Mayor Don Slesnick, Commissioners Chip Withers and Maria Anderson, County Commissioner Rebeca Sosa, and many members of the Garden Club including club president Kay Murff and project co-chairpersons Betsy and Larry Adams, and Evelyn Budde.
