Wine lovers, Rotarians and guests gathered at Angelique Euro Café on June 10 for a gourmet four-course dinner with wine pairings donated by “the” Michael Mondavi. Representing Mondavi was Miguel Pla who shared information on the various wines served and the reason for the pairings.
Guests also had an opportunity to buy chances for some great prizes including a $200 gift certificate donated by Rotarian Eddie Snow from Snow’s Jewelers on Miracle Mile and Coconut Grove independent hair stylist, J.B. Veltman, who donated a haircut and color worth $240.
Coral Gables Rotary Community Service chair Lorraine Sheldon was especially grateful for all who supported this affair which netted more than $1,800 to benefit future Rotary community service projects.

Gables and always have interesting and education programs. At the June 5 meeting, members and guests were treated to a talk by Christina Diaz Gonzalez, awardwinning author of The Red Umbrella and A Thunderous Whisper. The author addressed the importance of researching one’s own family history and spoke of how a small story can paint a broader picture, something she discovered herself.
Her books are both inspiring and entertaining having won numerous awards and recognition including the American Library Association’s Best Fiction for Young Adults, Florida Book Award, Nebraska Book Award, a Notable Social Studies Book and the International Reading Association’s Teacher’s Choice Award.
Speaking of books, on June 18 the GFWC Coco Plum Woman’s Club conducted a book review at the clubhouse. Rosann Whitten reviewed American Mirror, The Life and Art of Norman Rockwell by Deborah Solomon. The crowd enjoyed learning more about Rockwell through the author’s words.
In other summer club news, the GFWC Coral Gables Woman’s Club has donated the use of its clubhouse at 1001 E. Ponce de Leon Blvd. to host a fundraiser in the memory of Tim Walsh to be held June 29, 2-6 p.m. Tickets to the event are $20 and include food, drinks and entertainment by DJ Joe “Elvis” Torres. After 13 years delivering excellent paramedic care, Tim Walsh, father of four, passed away at age 52. For tickets, call Thad at 305-772-8396. The event is being orchestrated by Coral Gables Fire and Rescue and the Coral Gables Firefighter Benevolent Association.
In addition, the Coral Gables Woman’s Club held its Annual President Reception on June 7.
This annual affair honoring past president Mireya Kilmon included a dinner, dancing and an opportunity to share the many successes of Mireya’s two year term. Earlier in May, Mireya passed the torch to new club president Mayra Dominguez.
Members, spouses and friends all gathered at the Coral Gables Woman’s Clubhouse for a fun evening. Among the many enjoying the evening were Coral Gables Mayor Jim Cason and wife, Carmen; several past club presidents including Barbara Lapsley, Charo Bolanos, and Linda Hartwell.
