Another fun event coming up soon will be GFWC Coral Gables Woman’s Club annual casino night and silent auction fundraiser to take place Mar. 9, 7 p.m., in the clubhouse at 1001 E. Ponce de Leon Blvd., to benefit the club’s free children’s dental clinic. This certainly is the best deal in town with tickets priced at only $25 per person. Those interested in learning more about climate change are invited to attend CLEO’s “Empowering Capable Climate Communicators” training series at the University of Miami’s Cox Science Building. This training series will be taking place Feb. 23; 9 a.m.-3:30 p.m.
with what appears to be a flammable flower in a cake.
The training series will provide material explaining to participants what must be done to mitigate, adapt to and work toward reversing the adverse effects of human-induced climate change. On the cultural front, the Coral Gables Museum celebrates the Year of Italian Culture kicking it off with the installation of the sculpture Spiral by Italian artist Enzo Carnebianca in the Museum Plaza
Several other exhibits and events also are planned as part of this Year of Italian Culture celebration including a beautiful new exhibit, “Italy in Motion,” opening Mar. 8, which will feature Italian designed modes of transportation including Ferraris, Vespas, Fiats, Ducatis and custom made bicycles. Coral Gables Museum also will be hosting the UNESCO Italian World Heritage Sites photography exhibit and two exhibits featuring Italian architecture curated by UM professor Carmen Guerrero. Look for additional events planned by the Museum including a trip to Tuscany, lectures, an Italian themed bike tour, wine tastings and musical performances.

Finally, January had lots of specials birthdays. Joan Reitsma, of The Giving Tree, who does so much to support myriad nonprofits, was surprised at her store recently with cake, flowers and balloons. In addition, Betty Alvarez, who seems to be everywhere taking photos for various publications and charities, gathered a crowd of her closest 200 friends for her birthday party at CRAVE. Music, showgirls, and more made this a very festive event for all with lots of media people and nonprofit representatives on hand to join in the fun.
