Despite the fact that Miami is a relative newcomer to the stage of major international cities (founded only in 1896), The Magic City is home to an impressive roster of sons and daughters who have achieved great and wondrous things.

One of them is Miami native Ron Magill, whose devotion to animals, civic involvement and leadership of Zoo Miami have made him a legend in the 305.

“Ron Magill is steadfast in his support of our community, who has always worked hard and done the right thing for Miami,” says David Arbetter of Arbetter’s Hot Dogs. “And that’s why I am proud to announce the new 12-inch, eight-ounce “Ron Magill Monster Dog” in honor of him. He’s the kind of person we love, and our community needs more like him.

Arbetter’s Hot Dogs, undeniably one of Miami’s most beloved restaurants, has made a point each year of recognizing and honoring Miamians like Ron Magill who collectively are the city’s “special sauce.”

“Ron played basketball for Palmetto High School and my late brother Ronnie played against him for Southwest,” adds Arbetter. “My family has known Ron since he was a teen and he’s always been a great guy. He is already in the Arbetter’s Hall of Fame, but we’re going to honor him again on President’s Day, which is Monday, February 17, 2025.

On that day, Arbetter’s Hot Dogs invites fans of Ron Magill, and of hot dogs, to gather at the restaurant for an afternoon of food, fellowship and the sounds of the Arbetter’s House Band, otherwise known as the Christopher Columbus High School Jazz Band.

“As someone who grew up going to Arbetter’s throughout my high school years, I know what an iconic institution it is,” says Magill. “This truly ranks as one of the most amazing recognitions that I have ever received. To have an Arbetter’s hot dog named after you means that you have really made it!”

Ron Magill has worked with wildlife for more than 40 years and is the host of HITN’s national wildlife documentary program, Mundo Salvaje con Ron Magill. As Zoo Miami’s “Goodwill Ambassador,” he has made frequent television appearances on numerous national programs. In addition, he has written and produced many articles and award-winning photographs and documentaries focusing on wildlife throughout the world.

Ron’s proudest professional accomplishment is the establishment of the “Ron Magill Conservation Endowment” at the Zoo Miami Foundation. This endowment is the largest of its kind at the zoo and provides tens of thousands of dollars annually to wildlife conservation by providing annual scholarships as well as supporting field conservation projects designed to protect wildlife in the wild areas where it is naturally found.

Arbetter’s Hot Dogs was founded in 1959 by David’s father Bob Arbetter and the eatery is renowned for its friendly staff, family-like atmosphere and the best hot dogs and chili in South Florida.

Arbetter’s is located at 8747 SW 40th Street in Miami.  Please visit their website at Arbetters.com.
