Area Stage Company recently celebrated its 35th Anniversary Gala and opening night of their 90-minute theatrical immersive experience of The Little Mermaid.

The evening was a magnificent homage to more than three decades of theatrical brilliance, innovation, and community impact. Attendees were treated to a night of dazzling performances and heartfelt tributes, reinforcing Area Stage’s status as a cornerstone of Miami’s arts scene.

Since its founding in 1989 by John and Maria Rodaz, Area Stage has continuously pushed the boundaries of theater, bringing world-class productions and exceptional training programs to South Florida.

The gala was a star-studded affair, with nostalgic moments that tugged at the heartstrings of many attendees. Walking the red carpet was Jodi Benson, the original voice of Ariel in Disney’s 1989 animated filmThe Little Mermaid.

Benson’s presence added a magical touch to the evening, especially as her daughter, Delaney Benson, took on the iconic role of the Little Mermaid in the night’s performance.

This beautiful generational connection underscored the enduring impact of Area Stage on the arts community.

Grammy Award winner Jon Secada, renowned for his contributions to animation and theater, also graced the event with his presence. Secada, known for his powerful voice and dynamic stage presence, has a long-standing relationship with the world of musical theater. His attendance at the gala added to the night’s illustrious atmosphere, celebrating both his and Area Stage’s contributions to the cultural fabric of Miami.

The gala showcased a spectacular production featuring a talented and diverse cast from across the country. Jonathan Chisolm, a nonbinary actor, delivered a captivating performance as Ursula, while Imran Hylton, the son of Jamaican immigrants and an alumnus of the New World School of the Arts, brought Sebastian to life with his dynamic portrayal. The audience was especially enchanted by Delaney Benson’s performance, following in her mother’s illustrious footsteps.

This special night was a testament to Area Stage’s unwavering commitment to diversity and representation in the arts. The performances were a vibrant celebration of the theater’s legacy and a promising glimpse into its future.

Guests stepped into a mystical seaside tavern where sailors and pirates share myths of mermaids and adventure in a brand new space carved out of an empty warehouse at Sunset Place Mall in South Miami designed by Frank J Oliva under the creative vision of director Giancarlo Rodaz. With notables such as Commissioner Raquel Regalado, South Miami Commissioner Steve Calle and South Miami Mayor Javier Fernandez offered their unwavering support ofthe arts and this momentous occasion.
